Iranian authorities are reportedly preparing to carry out the first execution of a demonstrator connected to the widespread anti-government protests that have shaken the nation. Human rights organisations have raised a critical alarm over the imminent execution of a young man arrested during the recent unrest.
Details of the Impending Execution
According to reports from the non-governmental groups Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) and the National Union for Democracy in Iran (NUFD), Erfan Soltani, aged 26, is scheduled to be hanged on Wednesday, January 14. Soltani was arrested last week during protests in the city of Karaj.
Sources informed IHRNGO that his family was notified of the death sentence and the January 14 execution date. The NUFD stated that Soltani was allegedly denied access to a lawyer. Reports from The US Sun indicate he was charged with "waging war against God," a capital offence under Iranian law.
A Crackdown and International Alarm
The planned execution occurs amidst a severe government crackdown on dissent. Human rights groups report that over 500 people have lost their lives and more than 10,000 have been arrested in recent weeks. The protests, initially sparked by Iran's failing economy, have evolved, with many participants now demanding total regime change.
IHRNGO Director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam issued a stark warning, comparing the current violence to the regime's crimes in the 1980s. "The risk of mass and extrajudicial executions of protesters is extremely serious," his statement read. It called on the international community, under the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, to act against killings by the Islamic Republic and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The NUFD is urgently seeking global support to stop Soltani's execution, emphasising that his "only crime was calling for freedom." The group took to X (formerly Twitter) with a simple plea: "Be his voice." Independent verification of the execution order remains difficult due to a communications blackout imposed by Iranian authorities.
Global Reactions and Warnings
The situation has drawn sharp international concern. U.S. President Donald Trump issued a direct warning to Tehran, stating that violence against protesters would be met with a U.S. military response. "They better not start shooting, because we’ll start shooting, too," he said on a Friday.
Following up on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!" The White House confirmed on Monday that military options, including the possibility of bombing Iran, were being considered. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that while diplomacy was the first option, the president was "unafraid to use military options if and when he deems necessary."
She added, "He certainly doesn’t want to see people being killed in the streets of Tehran. And unfortunately that’s something we are seeing right now." The world now watches closely as the January 14 date approaches, with the fate of Erfan Soltani hanging in the balance and fears growing for thousands of other detained protesters.
