The House of Representatives has advanced a bill aimed at strengthening the financial base of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) to accelerate development in the region. The proposed amendment to the SSDC Act, 2025, passed its second reading during plenary, sponsored by Hon. Julius Pondi, who represents Burutu Federal Constituency in Delta State.
Key Objectives of the Amendment
Pondi explained that the amendment is designed to enhance the commission's capacity to execute critical infrastructure and socio-economic projects. He emphasized that increased funding would enable the SSDC to address long-standing developmental challenges in sectors such as road infrastructure, healthcare, education, environmental remediation, youth empowerment, and economic development.
Support from Lawmakers
Lawmakers backing the bill noted that despite the South-South region's significant contribution to Nigeria's economy, it continues to face serious infrastructural deficits and socio-economic issues. They argued that strengthening the commission's funding framework would fast-track development initiatives and improve residents' quality of life.
Next Steps
The bill has been referred to the relevant House committee for further legislative consideration. The passage for second reading marks a major step toward equipping the SSDC with resources for inclusive growth.
Reactions from Civil Society
The Amalgamated Coalition of Activists in Nigeria and Diaspora (ACAND) welcomed the development. ACAND President Lucky Efe commended the House and the bill's sponsor, calling it a bold initiative capable of transforming South-South communities and promoting sustainable growth.
