President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived back in Nigeria following his official participation at a major international sustainability forum in the Middle East.
Diplomatic Mission and Major Agreement Signed
On Saturday, 17 January 2026, President Tinubu returned to the country after leading the Nigerian delegation to the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026 (ADSW 2026) in the United Arab Emirates. The President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the return in an official statement.
The high-level global forum, which brought together world leaders, policymakers, and investors, focused on advancing sustainable development and clean energy. President Tinubu was accompanied by senior ministers and top government officials.
A significant highlight of the trip was the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates. This landmark deal is set to dramatically enhance economic cooperation, boost two-way trade and investment, and foster technology transfer between the two nations.
Strategic Sectors and Investment Drive
The newly signed CEPA covers several critical sectors of the Nigerian economy, aligning with the government's diversification agenda. Key areas of collaboration include:
- Energy and renewable power
- Infrastructure development
- Agriculture and mining
- Manufacturing and emerging green industries
During the summit, President Tinubu made a major announcement to further attract foreign capital. He revealed that a joint Nigeria-UAE INVESTOPIA will be hosted in Lagos in February. This initiative is specifically designed to position Nigeria as a top destination for global investment, innovation, and strategic partnerships.
Ambitious Climate Finance and Energy Goals
Outlining Nigeria's climate action plans, President Tinubu set an ambitious financial target. He stated that Nigeria aims to mobilise up to $30 billion annually in climate and green industrial finance.
According to the President, these substantial funds will be channelled to support critical national projects. The focus will be on ongoing energy transition reforms, expanding electricity access across the country, accelerating the deployment of renewable energy sources, and driving inclusive economic growth.
President Tinubu's active role at ADSW 2026 underscores Nigeria's renewed commitment to engaging with global partners. It highlights the administration's strategy of leveraging international platforms to advance key national objectives in climate resilience, economic reform, and investment-led development.
