Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is poised to enact the state's financial blueprint for the coming year, with the signing of the ₦892 billion 2026 Appropriation Bill scheduled for Monday, December 22, 2025.
Ceremony Details and Legislative Backing
The official signing ceremony will be held at the Executive Council Chambers of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan. This follows the recent passage of the budget by the Oyo State House of Assembly last week, after lawmakers conducted a detailed review of the fiscal proposal.
The governor's Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, confirmed the development in a statement released on Sunday. The Assembly's approval provided the necessary legislative clearance for the governor to formally sign the spending plan into law.
Focus of the 2026 Budget of Economic Expansion
Governor Makinde initially presented the budget proposal, tagged “Budget of Economic Expansion,” to the state legislature on November 24, 2025. The total estimate stands at ₦891,985,074,480.79.
The governor outlined that the budget is strategically designed to consolidate the achievements of previous years while aggressively positioning Oyo State for greater productivity and broad-based economic growth. Key pillars of the fiscal plan include:
- Expanding economic opportunities across sectors.
- Improving critical infrastructure statewide.
- Strengthening human capital development initiatives.
Makinde emphasized that his administration will continue to prioritize prudent resource management and strategic investments to achieve these objectives.
Dignitaries and Stakeholders Expected at Signing
The event is expected to draw a high-profile gathering of dignitaries from Oyo State's political, judicial, and traditional institutions. Confirmed attendees include:
- Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal.
- Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin.
- The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Iyabo Yerima.
Other notable figures expected are former deputy governors Hamid Gbadamosi, Hazeem Gbolarumi, and Taofeek Arapaja; Mutiat Ladoja, wife of a former governor; and former Assembly Speaker Monsurat Sunmonu. The Deputy Speaker and members of the House Committee on Appropriation will also be present.
A broad spectrum of stakeholders, including leaders from the Oyo State Elders’ Council, the State Advisory Council, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), local government chairmen, labour unions, religious leaders, and traditional rulers, are also billed to attend.
The formal signing of the 2026 Appropriation Bill will mark the commencement of its implementation phase. It provides the legal framework for all government expenditure and development projects aimed at sustaining economic growth and enhancing the welfare of all residents in Oyo State in the coming year.
