Nasarawa's N545.2bn and Kano's N1.47trn 2026 Budgets Signed and Passed
Nasarawa, Kano Pass 2026 Budgets Totalling Over N2trn

In significant fiscal developments, two Nigerian states have moved forward with their financial plans for the coming year. Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has officially signed the 2026 appropriation bill into law, while the Kano State House of Assembly has passed its own record-breaking budget for the same fiscal period.

Nasarawa Governor Assents to 'Budget of Strategic Consolidation'

Governor Abdullahi Sule formalised the N545.2 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year on December 29, 2025. The signing ceremony took place at the Government House in Lafia, the state capital. The governor praised the state's legislative arm, led by Speaker Danladi Jatau, for the swift passage of the appropriation bill, which is tagged the 'Budget of Strategic Consolidation.'

Sule highlighted the productive collaboration between the executive and legislative branches of government, urging that this synergy be maintained to accelerate the state's development. He gave assurances to the people of Nasarawa that the signed budget would translate into more projects, programs, and policies designed to benefit them directly. The governor also pledged that his administration would ensure the budget is implemented effectively, with strict compliance to its provisions.

Speaker Jatau remarked that the timely passage and signing of the budget marked a significant moment in the state's history, underscoring a commitment to structured governance and planning.

Kano Assembly Passes Monumental N1.477 Trillion Appropriation Bill

In a related development, the Kano State House of Assembly has passed its 2026 Appropriation Bill, amounting to a colossal N1.477 trillion. The passage followed a plenary session where the bill underwent its second reading and was deliberated upon by the Committee of the Whole. The sitting was presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jibril Falgore, in Kano.

This financial plan was initially presented to the Assembly by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on November 19, 2025. A detailed breakdown reveals a strong focus on development, with N934.6 billion (68%) allocated to capital expenditure. Recurrent expenditure is set to receive N433.4 billion (32%).

This capital-to-recurrent ratio is noted as one of the highest in the state's recent fiscal history, indicating the government's pronounced emphasis on infrastructure and long-term development projects. With legislative approval secured, the budget is now set to be transmitted to the governor for his assent, as required by law.

Assembly Mourns Late Members

The plenary session also included a valedictory segment to honour two members of the House who passed away. The lawmakers, Aminu Sa'ad of Ungogo Constituency and Sarki Aliyu Daneji of Kano Municipal Constituency, died within hours of each other on December 24, 2025, while still in active service.

Speaker Falgore described their deaths as a profound loss to both the legislative chamber and the state. He eulogised the late legislators as dedicated public servants who made substantial contributions to lawmaking and the development of their communities. Their commitment to democratic principles and the welfare of their constituents, he noted, would not be forgotten.

These budgetary actions in Nasarawa and Kano set the stage for the states' developmental agendas in 2026, with Kano's plan representing one of the largest state budgets in the country's history.
