Ekiti Anglican Diocese Advocates for Peaceful Elections and Enhanced Security Measures
The Ekiti Anglican Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has issued a strong call for renewed dedication to godly parenting, national integrity, and peaceful democratic processes. This appeal came as the diocese concluded the Third Session of its Twentieth Synod, which also marked its 60th anniversary celebrations. The event, held at the Ekiti Diocesan Camp Ground (Ile Adura), gathered over 700 participants, including clergy, laity, and church leaders, under the guidance of the Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Andrew Olusola Ajayi.
Focus on Godly Parenting and Moral Values
In a communiqué signed by Chairman Taiwo Olatubosun and Secretary The Ven. Emmanuel Feranmi Ojo, the Synod highlighted its theme, “Children Are the Heritage of God” (Psalm 127:3), describing it as particularly relevant given the rising moral challenges affecting youth today. Participants emphasized that raising children in a godly manner is both a spiritual obligation and a societal responsibility. They pointed to discipline, intentional Christian teaching, and mentorship as essential strategies for nurturing the next generation.
National Issues: Anti-Corruption and Economic Concerns
On broader national matters, the Synod acknowledged the Federal Government's efforts in combating corruption but urged for greater transparency and fairness in these initiatives. It stressed the importance of properly reinvesting funds saved from the removal of fuel subsidies to alleviate the economic hardships faced by citizens. Additionally, the Synod expressed deep concern over the persistent insecurity in Nigeria, including violent attacks and kidnappings, calling on the government to enhance its response to criminal activities.
Electoral Integrity and Security Reforms
The Synod underscored the critical role of electronic transmission of results in ensuring credible elections, especially with the 2027 general polls approaching. It called on anti-corruption agencies to actively address vote-buying and emphasized the need for electoral bodies and security agencies to maintain impartiality. Regarding the upcoming Ekiti State governorship election in June 2026, the Synod appealed for a peaceful electoral process and a level playing field for all political actors, encouraging citizens to engage responsibly in the democratic exercise.
Economic and Security Recommendations
Further resolutions included urging governments at all levels to prioritize job creation and promote industrialization, shifting the economy from consumption to production. The Synod argued that reducing unemployment would significantly improve both security and economic stability. In light of ongoing security challenges, it advised citizens to consider lawful means of self-defence while also calling on the President to intensify efforts against banditry, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
Call for Patriotism and Unity
Concluding its deliberations, the Synod called on Nigerians to remain patriotic, uphold moral values, and work collectively towards national unity and development. It encouraged continuous prayers for the country, expressing hope for divine intervention and lasting peace. The event featured sermons, Bible studies, and discussions led by prominent Anglican bishops from across Nigeria, reinforcing the church's commitment to societal issues.
