Nigerian Lawyer's Burial Video Goes Viral on TikTok, Sparks Widespread Discussion
A relationship therapist and video creator named Precious Eze has ignited significant online conversation after sharing footage from a Nigerian lawyer's burial ceremony on TikTok. According to Precious, this marked her first experience witnessing the burial rituals of a legal professional in Nigeria, prompting her to document the solemn occasion for her social media followers.
Visual Documentation of Legal Profession's Final Farewell
In the videos shared by Precious, a group of legal practitioners dressed in traditional courtroom attire—complete with black gowns, white horsehair wigs, white collarettes, white shirts, and black clothing underneath—are seen carrying the coffin of their deceased colleague to the gravesite. The exact location and timing of the burial remain undisclosed, as does the identity of the deceased barrister.
Notably, a white horsehair wig and a black gown were placed ceremoniously on the coffin, while another clip showed Precious marveling at the depth of the burial plot. Text overlaid on her video read: "It's my first time seeing how deep lawyers grave is. To bury a barrister is so painful after all the studies."
Legal Experts Dismiss Burial Myths and Clarify Traditions
The viral video has brought renewed attention to longstanding myths about how Nigerian lawyers are buried, particularly the widespread belief that they are interred face-down. Barrister Chidera Divine Ebimnamaonye, founder of Pure Legal Solicitors, categorically dismissed this claim during an exclusive interview.
"Lawyers are not buried upside down," Ebimnamaonye stated emphatically. "If you see a lawyer or human buried upside down, he belongs to some associations whose practice demands 'burial upside down.' It is unfounded in any legal book or law that lawyers are meant to be buried facedown or upside down. And there is no rule in Nigeria that guides the burying of people in a particular way. Faced down or upside down are all legally permissible."
When questioned about specific burial protocols for legal professionals, Ebimnamaonye explained that the primary consideration should be public health rather than professional status. "The most important thing is burying them in a way that won't cause health issues for neighbours. A dead body will decay; it is immaterial how you position the body in the coffin. There's no particular way a lawyer should be buried. Face down or up is at the discretion of the family."
Symbolism and Professional Tributes Explained
Addressing the scene showing what appeared to be a "transfer of authority" in Precious' video, Barrister Ebimnamaonye provided clarification: "Symbol of authority means that they are giving him his father's legal apparel to keep. The law cloth means he had a lawyer dad."
Barrister Chipuruime Obiagwu-Udeh, a distinguished lawyer recognized for her double first-class honours from Imo State University and the Nigerian Law School, corroborated this perspective. The Imo State University lecturer emphasized that lawyers are generally buried like any other individuals, with no unique burial requirements specific to their profession.
"Lawyers are buried just like every other person," Obiagwu-Udeh stated. "Except that particular lawyer belongs to some type of group that requires special activities and ceremonies to be done. I must quickly add that one activity that stands out during a lawyer's burial is the High Court Session, where their colleagues pay their last respect to the late lawyer."
Social Media Reactions Reflect Public Fascination
The viral video has generated numerous reactions across social media platforms, with many users expressing similar surprise and curiosity about legal burial customs:

Broader Context of Legal Profession News
This viral moment occurs within a broader context of recent news concerning Nigerian legal professionals. Previously, Legit.ng reported that lawyer Bolanle Raheem was finally buried in Lagos after her tragic death. In another incident, a lawyer reportedly slumped to his death outside a courtroom in Port Harcourt, collapsing just as he stepped outside the Magistrate Court building on Moscow Road.
The Port Harcourt branch of the Nigerian Bar Association leadership remained silent on that matter, though lawyer Felix Ashimole seemingly confirmed the incident through a WhatsApp message circulated across various platforms in the region.
The combination of Precious Eze's viral video and expert commentary from legal professionals has provided rare public insight into burial practices within Nigeria's legal community while dispelling longstanding myths that have circulated for generations.
