70-Year-Old Man Seeks Divorce Over Wife's Mockery and Violent Behavior in Oyo Court
Ahmed Babalola, a 70-year-old man, has approached the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking an end to his three-decade-long marriage. He cited his wife Aduke's alleged troublesome and humiliating conduct as the primary reason for his petition.
Allegations of Humiliation and Violence
Babalola described his wife as a "nightmare to live with", claiming she consistently mocks him by telling neighbors and relatives that he is incapable in bed. He asserted that this accusation is false, stating, "Even at 70 years of age, I remain strong and capable in bed." Beyond the humiliation, he accused Aduke of violent tendencies, including drawing a knife on him twice during arguments.
"I would have been a dead man by now but for the timely intervention of our neighbors," Babalola told the court. He added that he now sleeps with one eye open, fearing for his safety. The plaintiff also reported her to the police, but she allegedly bragged about escalating her actions.
Destructive Incidents and Family Strife
The marital discord reached a peak during Babalola's 70th birthday celebration. He claimed Aduke tore his newly sewn attire and destroyed his birthday cake, turning what should have been a joyous occasion into a nightmare. Additionally, he accused her of causing disaffection within his family by turning members against each other.
"My wife has become a thorn in the flesh of everyone who interacts with her," he lamented. Babalola emphasized that he has endured this behavior for too long and can no longer tolerate the threats and humiliation.
Wife's Consent and Counter-Request
Aduke consented to the divorce but made a specific request to the court. She asked that her husband be directed to take responsibility for their children's upkeep, highlighting feeding, education, and healthcare as critical areas needing attention. This indicates that while she agrees to end the marriage, financial support for their offspring remains a priority.
Court Proceedings and Adjournment
The court president, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, has adjourned the case until May 6 for the defense to present its side. Babalola has prayed the court not only to dissolve the marriage but also to issue an order preventing Aduke from threatening him or infringing on his privacy in the future.
This case highlights the severe breakdown of a long-term marriage, with allegations ranging from emotional abuse and public shaming to physical violence and property destruction. The outcome will depend on the court's evaluation of both parties' testimonies and evidence presented during the upcoming sessions.
