The ancient town of Badagry in Lagos State has been plunged into a week-long period of solemn reflection following the passing of its paramount ruler. The Badagry Local Government Area has officially declared a seven-day mourning period for the late Akran of Badagry Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I.

The council chairman, Babatunde Hunpe, made the formal announcement on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in Badagry. He conveyed the news through his Chief Press Secretary, Austin Kriko, stating the action was taken with the explicit approval of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
"With the approval of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, I officially announce with profound sorrow, the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry Kingdom," Chairman Hunpe stated. The monarch died peacefully on Monday, January 12, 2026, concluding a reign that spanned nearly five decades.
