National Assembly Applauds Interior Minister Tunji-Ojo for Transformative Reforms
The joint committees of the Senate and House of Representatives on Interior have publicly commended Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, for his impactful and wide-ranging reforms since assuming office. This recognition came during a budget defence session held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, in Abuja, where lawmakers highlighted the positive changes across various sectors under the ministry's purview.
Senator Oshiomhole Leads Praise for Immigration and Service Improvements
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, spoke on behalf of the joint session, acknowledging the minister's efforts in revitalizing key services. He specifically noted the enhanced performance of the immigration service, stating that it now reflects a new phase of efficiency and professionalism. "Each time I pass through our airports now, I feel honoured and elated that our immigration service is wearing a new phase. The reforms currently being undertaken by the minister are yielding appreciable results," Oshiomhole remarked.
He further emphasized that these reforms are not only improving domestic operations but also bolstering Nigeria's reputation on the international stage. While acknowledging that more work is needed to ensure sustainability, the senator praised the visible progress in areas such as civil defence, correctional services, and fire safety.
Key Request on Recruitment Process for Security Services
During the session, Oshiomhole also addressed a critical issue regarding the recruitment process for personnel in the Civil Defence, Correctional, Immigration, and Fire Service. He urged the Civil Defence, Correctional, Immigration and Fire Service Board to expedite the ongoing recruitment exercises, emphasizing the importance of timely release of results for applicants. He charged the Board to, as a matter of urgent national importance, conclude the recruitment process and release the list for successful applicants, highlighting the need for efficiency in bolstering national security and service delivery.
The senator referenced recent directives from the President, which have expanded the roles of these services, such as the Civil Defence Corps providing security for VIPs, as evidence of renewed confidence in the ministry's capabilities.
Background on Minister Tunji-Ojo's Credentials
In related news, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has previously confirmed the authenticity of Minister Tunji-Ojo's certificate, dispelling any rumours to the contrary. According to NYSC statements from 2023, Tunji-Ojo was initially mobilized in 2006 but absconded, later resurfacing in 2018 and being remobilized in 2019. This clarification underscores the minister's compliance with national service requirements, adding context to his current leadership role.
The joint committees' commendation signals strong legislative support for the Interior Ministry's ongoing initiatives, with lawmakers expressing optimism about continued improvements under Tunji-Ojo's stewardship.
