Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a strong call for a fundamental overhaul of Nigeria's leadership recruitment process, asserting that competence and integrity must be prioritized to ensure democracy delivers meaningful economic growth. Obi made these remarks on Saturday during the launch of a landmark report by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, titled "Strengthening the Nexus Between Democracy and Economic Growth in Nigeria."
Report Highlights Nigeria's Development Struggles
In a post on his X handle, Obi highlighted that the report and subsequent panel discussions underscored Nigeria's persistent challenges in key development areas, including healthcare, education, and poverty reduction. He noted that despite years of democratic governance, the country has experienced declining economic well-being among citizens and a weakening of democratic institutions.
"The report reiterated the necessary truth that we have failed in critical areas of development—health, education, and pulling our people out of poverty," Obi stated. He added that over the past decade, Nigeria's democratic progress has not translated into improved living standards, describing this as a disconnect between governance and citizen welfare.
Emphasis on Competence and Institutional Strength
Obi emphasized that for democracy to thrive, leadership selection must be rooted in "competence, capacity, compassion, character, and commitment" to public service. He further stressed the need to strengthen institutions, noting that independent and accountable systems are essential for sustainable development and effective governance.
"We must rebuild trust in our institutions, restore discipline in leadership, and ensure that governance translates into measurable improvements in the lives of Nigerians," he said. The former Anambra State governor also reiterated his belief in the country's potential for transformation, maintaining that with the right leadership and institutional reforms, progress is achievable. "A new Nigeria is possible," he added.
