Wike's Scathing Attack on Atiku Abubakar
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has launched a fresh and blistering attack on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a serial contestant and loser in Nigeria's political arena. The verbal assault came after Atiku criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu, prompting Wike to question the credibility of such criticism.
The Political Accusation
While inspecting projects in Abuja, Wike did not mince words when addressing Atiku's political track record. "Atiku is a serial failure. He is a serial contestant and loser, and I am sure that in 2031, he will still contest," Wike declared emphatically. The FCT Minister argued that Nigerians would not take Atiku's comments seriously given his history of electoral defeats.
Wike, who previously served as a two-term governor of Rivers State, maintained that Atiku's political survival depends entirely on his repeated attempts to contest for office. He suggested that the former vice president's criticism of the Tinubu administration lacks substance because Atiku's own governance record does not support his claims about effective leadership.
Nigerian Public Reactions
The video of Wike's comments quickly circulated on social media, generating diverse reactions from Nigerians across the political spectrum:
- One citizen highlighted the shifting dynamics of Nigerian politics: "Politics is a horrible leveller for the greedy. When Atiku was Vice President, this Wike man was a local government chairman. Today, he's tearing Atiku's shirt in public because that one thinks he has a presidential birth right."
- Omoniyi Akintobi criticized Wike's governance approach: "Yes, we are seeing the projects you are executing in Abuja, but we also saw how the Kugbe bus terminal, estimated to cost 30 to 50 billion, nearly killed innocent citizens with no consequences. While people are hungry and battling high inflation, you're cashing out through inflated projects."
- Another commenter referenced the Abuja bus terminal incident: "Oga Wike, see your Kugbo Bus Terminal that ordinary wind blows apart. And you still left it like that, exposed. You say your government has done something."
- Ben Obilo alleged administrative irregularities: "Talking nonsense... what has this government achieved that over 3 years now no budget has been passed? This is criminality at the highest level. We go see naa come 2027."
- Alistair described Atiku's political positioning: "Serial opposition indeed. Even as Vice President, he was the biggest opposition the president had."
Broader Political Context
This latest exchange occurs against the backdrop of Nigeria's complex political landscape, where former allies often become vocal critics. Wike's attack represents more than personal animosity—it reflects deeper tensions within Nigeria's political establishment as different factions position themselves ahead of future electoral cycles.
The minister's comments also come shortly after he was reportedly moved to tears while speaking at the funeral of Senator Barinada Barry Mpigi in Port Harcourt. During that emotional tribute, Wike recalled how the late senator would visit him at his Abuja residence and pledge loyalty, highlighting the personal relationships that often underpin political alliances in Nigeria.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, such public exchanges between prominent political figures are likely to intensify, with each side seeking to establish narrative control and undermine opponents' credibility among the electorate.
