The APC Progressive Mandate Group has issued a strong condemnation of the impeachment proceedings initiated against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. The group, in a statement released on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, described the move as legally defective and politically motivated.
Undermining Presidential Peace Accord
In a statement signed by its leader, Comrade Ayodele Alonge, the organisation argued that the impeachment action directly undermines the peace agreement personally brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in late 2025. That intervention was designed to resolve the protracted political conflict between Governor Fubara, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the state House of Assembly.
The group warned that allowing the impeachment to proceed risks reopening deep political tensions in the oil-rich state and could severely weaken public confidence in Nigeria's democratic institutions. It insisted that the Rivers State House of Assembly is relying on weak procedural grounds that cannot withstand proper constitutional scrutiny.
Faulty Grounds and Political Rivalry
The APC faction specifically faulted the Assembly's reliance on allegations such as extra-budgetary spending, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and alleged non-compliance with court directives. It also rejected similar claims levelled against Deputy Governor Odu, which include accusations of reckless spending and obstruction of legislative duties.
According to the group, the impeachment attempt blatantly disregards the agreement that restored political calm after months of internal conflict and allowed normal governance to resume in Rivers State. "President Tinubu intervened decisively last year to resolve tensions that threatened governance in Rivers State," the statement read. "To attempt to unravel that agreement now is not only irresponsible, it is a direct challenge to the authority and wisdom of the President himself."
Defection and Call for National Assembly Intervention
The statement also referenced Governor Fubara's significant political defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December 2025. This move reportedly attracted several influential figures into the ruling party, strengthening its base in the state.
The group questioned the role of Minister Wike and his supporters in the Assembly, suggesting the process reflects political rivalry rather than genuine accountability. "It is now evident that the effort to destabilise Rivers stems from a faction led by Minister Wike and sympathetic legislators," the statement alleged.
The APC Progressive Mandate Group has called on the National Assembly to intervene immediately to protect due process. It warned that failure to act could encourage similar political crises in other states and demanded a formal apology to President Tinubu alongside a suspension of all impeachment steps. "This impeachment is not corrective; it is a political misadventure," the group concluded.
