The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a significant step in strengthening its internal structures by inaugurating Zonal Congress Committees across three major geopolitical zones in Nigeria. The party used the occasion to firmly dismiss widespread rumours of an impending political alignment with several high-profile national figures.
Committees Inaugurated Across Three Zones
The party's national leadership oversaw the inauguration ceremonies, which were held on different dates in January 2026. The South-West Zonal Congress Committee was inaugurated in Ekiti State on January 7, 2026. The event was led by the National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe. Hon. Bala Sani will chair the Congress Committee, while Hon. Kyauta Yakubu will head the Appeal Committee for the zone.
On the same day, the South-East Zonal Congress Committee was inaugurated in Enugu State. The Secretary of the ADC Board of Trustees (BOT), Chief Rufus Ekenmi, chaired this ceremony. Barrister Adamu Ado Dauda was appointed to lead the Congress Committee, with Mrs. Iyabo Salami Alibi taking charge of the Appeal Committee.
The North-Central zone's committee was inaugurated earlier, on January 5, 2026. The National Chairman also presided over this event. Hon. Lolo Ehirudu will head the Congress Committee, and Hon. Sa’ad Aboki will lead the Appeal Committee for the North-Central region.
ADC Rejects Rumours of Political Alliances
In a strong statement contained in a communique signed by National Chairman Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, the ADC addressed circulating speculation head-on. The party described claims of political alignment with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party's Mr. Peter Obi, former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former President Goodluck Jonathan as completely unfounded.
The ADC urged its members and the Nigerian public to disregard these rumours entirely. The party's leadership reiterated that its primary focus remains on building a strong, independent, and ideologically driven political platform. It reaffirmed its commitment to providing a credible and people-centred alternative within the nation's democratic space.
Commitment to Internal Democracy and Constitutional Order
The communique emphasised the party's unwavering dedication to the principles of internal democracy, transparency, and strict adherence to its constitution. A key point stressed was the eligibility criteria for participation in party affairs.
According to the ADC constitution, only fully registered members whose financial obligations are up-to-date are qualified to vote or be voted for in all party congresses and elections. This rule underscores the party's intent to maintain an orderly and accountable internal electoral process.
In a related development aimed at further institutional strengthening, the ADC has constituted a 21-member Constitution Review Committee. The committee includes notable figures such as former Imo State Governor Hon. Emeke Ihedioha, immediate past national chairman Ralph Nwosu, Senators Enynnaya Abaribe and Ehigie Uzamere, and legal icon Etigwe Uwa SAN, among others. Their mandate is to review the party's constitution to ensure inclusivity and alignment with global best practices.
National Chairman Senator David Mark, while inaugurating this review committee in Abuja, stated that the move marks a significant milestone in the ADC's continuous growth. He said it underscores the collective resolve to build a party founded on strong democratic values, internal cohesion, and effective governance.
