The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a significant step towards internal restructuring by appointing a high-powered committee to overhaul its governing document. The 21-member Constitution Review Committee, inaugurated in Abuja on Thursday, January 8, 2026, includes prominent political figures such as former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha, immediate past national chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.
Committee Composition and Mandate
National Chairman of the ADC, Senator David Mark, inaugurated the committee, describing the event as a milestone for the party's growth. He stated that the review aims to ensure the constitution reflects present realities and aligns with global best practices for democratic party administration. Legal icon Etigwe Uwa (SAN) will chair the committee, promising to deliver a document that will make the ADC stand out.
Other notable members of the committee include Senator Ehigie Uzamere, Peter Oyewole, C.I. Maduabum, Dr. Sally Oguni-Agbo, and former Inspector-General of Police, DIG Ibrahim Adamu (rtd). The committee's mandate is to listen to party members at all levels and produce a constitution that strengthens internal democracy, enhances discipline, and guarantees transparency.
Internal Tensions Over 2027 Presidential Ticket
As the party works on its foundational document, internal disagreements have surfaced regarding its presidential candidate for the 2027 election. A chieftain of the ADC, Dele Momodu, has criticized supporters of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, for insisting he must be the party's flagbearer.
Momodu, speaking on Channels Television, faulted comments by Obi's allies, Aisha Yesufu and Prof. Pat Utomi, who suggested support could be withdrawn if Obi is not given the ticket. Yesufu had argued Obi is "the best" and should not "play second fiddle." Momodu described such language as "divisive and insulting" to other experienced leaders within the ADC coalition, recalling the long political history of figures like Atiku Abubakar.
Major Defection Bolsters ADC Ranks
In a related development, the ADC has welcomed a significant defector from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Former APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, officially joined the ADC in a ceremony in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
Adamu, who served as APC chairman from March 2022 until his resignation in July 2023, explained his defection was guided by principle and conscience. He accused the APC of deviating from its founding ideals, sidelining experienced members, and weakening internal democracy. The 79-year-old former Nasarawa State governor had maintained a low profile since leaving the APC leadership under unclear circumstances.
Looking Ahead for the ADC
The twin events of the constitution review and a major defection highlight the ADC's active positioning as a potential alternative in Nigeria's political landscape. The outcome of the constitutional review and the management of internal aspirations for the 2027 ticket will be critical tests for the party's cohesion and future trajectory. The committee is expected to undertake a comprehensive process to deliver a revised constitution that meets the party's evolving needs.
