ADC's Mark-Led Executive Must Act Decisively, Says Opposition Chieftain Dagogo
Hon. Farah Dagogo, a prominent chieftain of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), has issued a strong call to action for the party's newly elected National Executive Committee, which is now led by Senator David Mark. Speaking on the sidelines of the ADC's national convention held in Abuja, Dagogo emphasized the critical need for the leadership to act decisively in addressing the growing expectations of Nigerians as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
Urgent Call for Proactive Leadership
Dagogo, a former lawmaker, congratulated the new leadership but stressed that the current political climate demands urgency, focus, and a clear commitment to rebuilding public confidence in governance. He highlighted that Senator David Mark, as one of Nigeria's most accomplished Senate Presidents, brings valuable experience and a strong track record to the role. However, Dagogo pointed out that the responsibility extends beyond individual credentials, requiring the entire executive committee to collectively rise to the challenge of offering a credible and effective opposition.
According to Dagogo, the ADC's new executive carries the hopes of millions of Nigerians who are grappling with severe economic hardship, widespread insecurity, and persistent governance challenges. He expressed confidence that, with a team of experienced figures, the ADC can position itself as a viable alternative capable of delivering stability, security, and national prosperity. "To whom much support, trust, and goodwill are given, much more is expected in return," he stated, adding that Nigerians are increasingly looking to the ADC as a platform for meaningful change.
Convention Highlights and Constitutional Amendment
The ADC national convention, where this call was made, saw Senator David Mark elected as the substantive National Chairman after securing an impressive 1,471 votes. The event also featured a significant constitutional amendment, which was overwhelmingly approved by delegates. Out of 1,576 accredited voters, 1,471 supported the amendment, representing a 94 per cent approval rate, underscoring broad consensus within the party.
Among the notable figures present at the convention were:
- Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar
- Former governors Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, and Rauf Aregbesola
- Other key party leaders and stakeholders
This gathering highlighted the ADC's efforts to consolidate its leadership and strengthen its political framework ahead of future electoral contests.
Broader Implications for Nigerian Politics
Dagogo's remarks underscore the increasing pressure on opposition parties like the ADC to provide robust alternatives to the ruling government. As Nigeria faces multifaceted challenges, including economic instability and security threats, the call for proactive leadership resonates with a public eager for tangible solutions. The ADC's ability to leverage its experienced leadership, as exemplified by figures like David Mark, will be crucial in shaping its role as a credible force in the political landscape.
Moving forward, the party's executive committee must navigate internal dynamics while addressing external expectations, a task that Dagogo believes requires immediate and concerted action. The success of this endeavor could significantly influence voter sentiment and party performance in the upcoming 2027 elections.
