Prince Adewole Adebayo, the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has emerged as the party's presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. His adoption took place at the SDP national convention held in Bauchi, where he was the sole aspirant. Delegates from all 36 states endorsed his candidacy by consensus, and the convention also elected new members of the National Working Committee.
Adebayo's Concerns and Vision
Addressing party members after his emergence, Adebayo expressed deep concern over Nigeria's worsening economic situation, insecurity, and declining democratic values. He highlighted that many Nigerians face unemployment, poor healthcare, and rising hardship despite the country's abundant resources. The former presidential candidate criticized political leaders for prioritizing foreign medical trips and overseas investments while domestic infrastructure continues to deteriorate. He emphasized that citizens lack access to quality healthcare and decent living conditions.
Security and Democracy
Adebayo also raised alarms about the state of security, alleging that Nigerians deserve a more transparent and accountable system capable of protecting lives and property. He warned against threats to multiparty democracy, arguing that Nigeria's democratic future hinges on preserving political plurality and freedom of association. He noted that concentrating political power in a few hands could undermine democratic governance. Furthermore, he stressed that political parties should remain ideologically driven and committed to national unity and development, rather than personal interests.
Commendation for Bala Mohammed
The SDP chieftain commended Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for supporting the hosting of the convention despite alleged attempts by unnamed persons to frustrate the event. He described the governor as a defender of democratic principles and praised his leadership style. Adebayo concluded by stating that the 2027 election would offer Nigerians another opportunity to redefine the country's political direction and strengthen democratic institutions.
