AMG Rejects Ondo APC's Mandatory Support Group Registration Order

The Asiwaju Mandate Group (AMG) has firmly rejected a directive issued by the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that mandates the registration of all support groups at the state level. The group described this move as unnecessary and an overreach, arguing that it reflects a misunderstanding of the structure and independence of recognized support groups.

Background of the Directive

The directive was issued through the party's Publicity Secretary, Otunba Muyide Kayode, with the stated aim of strengthening party cohesion and enhancing electoral readiness ahead of upcoming political activities. However, in a statement signed by its Director of Communication, Comrade Ayodeji Ologun, AMG expressed strong opposition to this requirement.

AMG's Position and Concerns

AMG stated that it is already registered and recognized at the national level in accordance with party provisions, operating under the framework of the APC's national leadership responsible for support groups and mobilization. The group emphasized that it is neither funded nor controlled by the Ondo State Government or the APC at the state level, insisting that no state structure has the authority to compel its operations in a way that undermines its autonomy.

Additionally, AMG raised serious safety concerns, citing a previous incident where an attempt to convene support groups at the state secretariat reportedly ended in violence, leaving several members injured. "It is unreasonable to expect responsible groups to expose their members to a repeat of such an experience under the guise of administrative coordination," the statement said.

Commitment to APC and Grassroots Mobilization

While reaffirming its commitment to the APC, AMG stressed that support groups are strategic partners in grassroots mobilization and not subordinate entities to state actors. The group highlighted its extensive activities across all 18 local government areas of Ondo State, which include:

  • Voter education initiatives
  • Volunteer mobilization efforts
  • Community outreach programs
  • Promotion of government policies

AMG urged party leaders in Ondo State to prioritize inclusiveness and genuine cohesion rather than attempting to impose control on independent support groups. The group also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and contributing to the electoral success of the APC in future elections.

Implications for Party Dynamics

This dispute highlights ongoing tensions within political parties regarding the autonomy of support groups and the balance of power between national and state-level structures. As political activities intensify, such conflicts could impact party unity and effectiveness in mobilizing grassroots support.
