The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has raised alarm over an alleged plot by the Labour Party (LP) government led by Governor Alex Otti to destabilise the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement released on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the party accused the LP administration of using former aspirants within its ranks to manufacture a crisis and undermine internal unity.
APC Alleges N5 Billion Scheme
The APC claimed that credible intelligence revealed a well-known businessman, a former party member and close associate of Governor Otti, was used as a conduit to release N5 billion to certain individuals at the APC national headquarters. The party alleged that part of the funds was directed to a frontline aspirant within its ranks to create confusion, sow division, and weaken the party from within.
Failed Attempts to Influence Primaries
The APC further stated that the Labour Party government had attempted to sponsor aspirants for positions in the House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly during the recently concluded APC primary elections. However, the party said it remained vigilant and resolute, successfully outsmarting those plots and denying such individuals the tickets they sought through backdoor arrangements.
Questions Over Government Priorities
The APC questioned the Otti administration's intentions, arguing that a confident government would not need to interfere in opposition affairs. The party asked: "Why the frantic attempts to infiltrate and compromise the opposition? Why deploy taxpayers' money on political misadventures instead of addressing the genuine needs of the people? Why seek to induce political opponents if you are certain of victory at the polls?"
Accusations of Non-Accountability
The APC also accused the Otti government of non-accountability and failure to address pensions, gratuities, and other entitlements. The party listed several projects, including 51 smart schools built with N54 billion, a N6.7 billion recreational facility, and a N4.3 billion ICT Centre, demanding answers from the government. Retirees and civil servants were urged to seek justice over denied pensions and minimum wage entitlements.
APC Vows Stronger 2027 Preparations
Despite the alleged plots, the APC said it has intensified preparations for the 2027 elections, vowing to strengthen its structure and expand its political base across the state. The party stated: "Every attempt to weaken our party has only made us stronger, more united, and more determined to rescue Abia State from the grip of deception, manipulation, and propaganda." Under the leadership of Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, the APC described itself as the fastest-growing political movement in Abia, expanding across every ward, local government area, and senatorial district.
Confidence in Electoral Victory
The APC expressed confidence in its electoral prospects, insisting it would secure convincing victories across all levels of government in Abia, including the governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and state assembly seats. The party called on Abians to hold the Otti government accountable for its alleged mismanagement and failure to deliver on key promises.
