Ademola Bankole, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) think-tank in Lagos State and a prince of Apa Kingdom, Badagry, has warned that individuals who cannot build a political structure should not seek power. Bankole, who also serves as Managing Director and Chief Coordinator of Broadcasting Talents Nigeria, shared his political journey and insights on the 2027 general election in an interview with ENIOLA DANIEL.
Political Journey and Background
Bankole began his political career at a young age, balancing college with involvement in politics alongside elder statesmen. He is known by the nickname 'Gudugudu,' which means a leader by example. Bankole was a member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), which dominated the South-West at the start of democracy in 1999, and later helped form the Action Congress (AC), which evolved into the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
Advice for Opposition Parties
Reflecting on the challenges faced by the opposition, Bankole cited President Bola Tinubu's experience in 2003 when his party, AD, was factionalised. Tinubu set aside his ambition and founded the Action Congress, drawing in other supporters. Bankole suggested that Peter Obi could learn from this approach rather than forming coalitions.
He emphasised that power is not served a la carte and that anyone aspiring to lead must justify their position. 'If you cannot build a political structure, don't go near power,' Bankole stated.
Consensus and Party Primaries
On the issue of consensus nominations, Bankole argued that consensus is only viable under a credible leader. He noted that congresses are the recognised method for candidate selection at the state level, while conventions are required nationally. Horse trading may occur before congress, but once approved, the decision becomes official.
Bankole stressed that politics is a full-time commitment, contrary to the belief that it can be done part-time. 'You can't spend time doing other things and become a neophyte in politics because being a neophyte will destroy other things previously achieved,' he said.
Endorsement of Obafemi Hamzat
Regarding the APC's endorsement of Obafemi Hamzat for the Lagos governorship ticket, Bankole expressed pride as a member of Apa Kingdom, noting that Hamzat would be the second person after Babatunde Raji-Fashola to claim Apa Kingdom origin. He described Apa Kingdom as the origin of Lagos State and argued against discrimination based on lineage.
Bankole also dismissed claims that occupying Alausa is now by coronation rather than election, explaining that all parties must conduct primaries to avoid sanctions from INEC. He noted that President Tinubu and other leaders declaring preference for Hamzat challenges others to present better candidates, similar to past group endorsements like Primrose and Agbalajobi.
Political Struggles and Leadership
Bankole highlighted that political leaders must engage with various aspects of human endeavour to emerge. He cited examples of leaders like Atiku Abubakar, who has persistently sought the presidency, and Muhammadu Buhari, whose political journey was volatile. In contrast, Goodluck Jonathan had a smoother path, while Tinubu fought and conquered multiple times.
He emphasised that no leader who undergoes political struggles should be considered a loser, describing Atiku as a national monument alongside Tinubu, Jonathan, and Obasanjo.
Tinubu's Influence and 2027 Prospects
Addressing the perception that Tinubu's word is law within the APC, Bankole argued that Tinubu should not be held guilty for expressing preferences, likening it to a father's guidance in a household. He noted that Tinubu's leadership offers a model for how millions can identify with a decision without conflict, saving Lagos from political crises.
On the 2027 presidential election, Bankole asserted that Tinubu can easily win re-election, citing the 2023 election as the most justified. He pointed out that the APC has more governors, House of Representatives members, and senators than other parties, making it nearly impossible for Peter Obi or Atiku Abubakar to defeat Tinubu.
Security and Economic Performance
Bankole acknowledged that certain parts of the country are under siege but expressed optimism that solutions are emerging, with foreign cooperation improving security. He credited Tinubu's government for significant economic shifts, including the implementation of student loans and attracting multinational companies. He claimed that the exchange rate has stabilised almost completely, positioning Nigeria as a safe haven for investment.
