Emeka Ihedioha Joins ADC, Receives Membership Card After PDP Exit
Ex-Imo Governor Ihedioha Joins ADC, Dumps PDP

In a significant political realignment in Imo State, former Governor Emeka Ihedioha has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This move comes after his high-profile resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a new chapter in his political career.

A Formal Defection and Registration

Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha formally completed his registration with the ADC on Monday, January 12, 2026. The event took place at his Mbutu Ward in the Aboh-Mbaise local government area of Imo State. The ward's Secretary, Prince Obinna Opara, conducted the registration process, while the Ward Chairman, Chief Alex Ahamuefula, presented Ihedioha with his official ADC membership card, bearing the notable number 001.

This action followed his resignation from the PDP on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. Ihedioha publicly stated that his departure from the PDP was driven by his belief that the party had failed to present itself as a credible opposition to Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Principles and Motivation Behind the Move

Speaking after receiving his membership card, the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives explained his deliberate choice to join the ADC. He expressed a strong belief in the party's core principles, which he identified as accountability, clear values, and genuine service to the people.

Ihedioha emphasized that both Nigeria and Imo State are in dire need of leadership that prioritizes the public interest and practices responsive governance. He stated, "Our people want leadership that listens, serves, and puts the common good above personal interest. I am convinced that the ADC provides a credible platform to pursue these goals."

He further highlighted that his decision to register at the ward level was a deliberate demonstration of his commitment to grassroots politics and internal party democracy.

ADC's Reception and Political Implications

The ADC leadership in Imo State warmly welcomed the former governor. The state chairman, Prof. James Okoroma, led members of the State Executive Committee to witness the registration ceremony. Professor Okoroma declared that Ihedioha's decision to join the ADC significantly strengthens the party's structure and influence within Imo State.

He noted that the move by a politician of Ihedioha's stature reaffirms the ADC's commitment to grassroots mobilisation and building a robust, value-driven political alternative in the state. This defection represents another setback for the PDP, which has recently seen other prominent figures, including a senator from Nasarawa, leave its ranks.

The event also provided a moment for reflection, as Ihedioha paid tribute to the late former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who passed away at 83. Ihedioha described Nwosu as a man of integrity and character whose work promoted transparency.

This political shift occurs against the backdrop of Ihedioha's continued prominence, as evidenced by the large celebration of his 60th birthday, which drew dignitaries including Peter Obi and thousands of supporters, all praising his dedication to good governance.
