The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has celebrated the successful conduct of its nationwide primaries, describing the exercise as a major milestone in the party's rapid growth and a clear sign of its rising acceptance across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Massive Turnout and Enthusiasm
The presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly primaries, held between Thursday and Friday, witnessed an impressive turnout of party members and supporters in states across the federation. Voting centers recorded high levels of participation and enthusiasm.
In a statement issued by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq., the NDC said the largely peaceful and transparent exercise reflected its commitment to internal democracy and grassroots participation.
Overcoming Challenges
According to the party, despite challenges posed by the Eid-el-Kabir holiday and transportation constraints in some parts of the country, members turned out in large numbers to participate in the historic exercise. The statement noted that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), monitored the process in several locations to ensure compliance with electoral guidelines and maintain order.
“The reports received from across the federation indicate that voting and affirmation exercises were conducted peacefully, while aspirants and supporters demonstrated remarkable maturity, discipline, and commitment to democratic ideals,” the party stated.
Innovative Primary Model
The NDC also highlighted its innovative primary election model, which allowed aspirants to contest before purchasing nomination forms. The party said this arrangement was designed to strengthen internal democracy, encourage broader participation, and reduce financial obstacles for aspiring candidates. Under this system, only aspirants who emerge victorious from the primaries will proceed to purchase nomination forms.
Inclusive Process
Party leaders and observers praised the exercise as one of the most inclusive internal electoral processes conducted by any political party in recent times. They noted that the atmosphere at many voting centers was marked by optimism, celebration, and renewed confidence in the party's future. Supporters were seen singing solidarity songs and expressing hope that the NDC would offer Nigerians a fresh political alternative anchored on transparency, accountability, and people-centered governance.
The party described the successful conclusion of the primaries as a significant step in its march toward becoming a formidable national political force. It added that the National Working Committee would complete the collation of results before making official declarations from the party's national headquarters.
Political Implications
With the scale of participation recorded nationwide, political analysts believe the exercise has further strengthened the NDC's momentum and positioned the party as one of the emerging forces to watch in the build-up to the 2027 elections.
