The People's Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Enugu State has concluded with Chief Sampson Nnamani emerging as the winner. The returning officer, High Chief Wisdom Okoye, announced the results on Sunday, declaring that Nnamani secured a landslide victory with 7,542 votes, defeating former Science and Technology Minister Uche Nnaji, who polled 121 votes.
Peaceful Conduct of the Primary
Chief Wisdom Okoye, speaking in Enugu, emphasized that the primary election was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere with strict adherence to the guidelines set by the PDP's National Working Committee. He noted that a total of 7,663 delegates were accredited for the exercise, which took place across all 17 local government areas of Enugu State.
“Distinguished party members, stakeholders, delegates, elders, members of the press, and the good people of Enugu State, my name is High Chief Wisdom Okoye. On behalf of the electoral panel constituted by the National Working Committee of the PDP, I hereby present the outcome of the PDP Governorship primaries election conducted across the 17 local government areas of Enugu State on Sunday,” Okoye declared.
He further stated: “It was a transparent exercise conducted in line with our constitution and the guidelines of our great party. The delegates exercised their democratic rights in an atmosphere of peace and orderliness. Following the collations and verifications of results across the local governments, there was a total number of accredited votes of 7,663. Chief Sampson Chukwu Nnamani scored a total of 7,542 votes, while Chief Uche Godfrey Nnaji scored 121 votes. Accordingly, having scored the highest number of the valid votes cast, Chief Sampson Chukwu Nnamani is hereby declared the winner of the PDP Governorship primaries election and returned as the duly elected candidate of the PDP for the forthcoming governorship elections in Enugu State.”
Nnamani's Acceptance and Call for Unity
In his acceptance speech, Chief Nnamani commended the delegates for their peaceful conduct and for making their choice through a democratic process. He also praised the PDP National Working Committee and the state chapter for organizing a peaceful exercise. Extending an olive branch to his opponent, Nnamani said, “I also thank my opponent, Uche Nnaji. You are a good man, and I invite you to come over so that together, we can achieve victory in 2027.”
