Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has declared that his administration would ensure the office of the Vice President becomes an active partner in governance rather than a ceremonial role. Obi made this statement on Saturday while accepting his affirmation as the party's presidential candidate and announcing Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Commitment to Rule of Law
In a post on his X handle, Obi pledged to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic institutions, and ensure transparency in governance if elected president. He emphasized that adherence to the rule of law would be strictly enforced for both public officials and citizens in line with constitutional provisions. “The rule of law will be fiercely upheld, and adherence to it will be sacrosanct for both government officials and citizens alike, strictly in accordance with our constitutional frameworks,” he said.
Inclusive Democracy
Obi also promised to promote a democratic system that respects opposition parties and encourages inclusive governance. “Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people, and for the people, completely free from interference by the ruling party. Instead, we will institutionalize deep respect for opposition parties and foster constructive engagement in governance,” he said. “Under my leadership, democracy will be pursued with integrity, fairness, and transparency.”
Role of the Vice President
Speaking on the role of his running mate, Obi stressed that the Vice President would play a meaningful role in governance. “I will make democracy work, and the Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tyre,” he said, announcing Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate. Obi expressed confidence that the partnership would support his vision of national renewal, improved governance, and economic transformation.
