PDP candidate accuses Cross River governor of intolerance

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Sir Arthur Jarvis Archibong, has strongly criticised Governor Bassey Otu over an alleged threat to “crush” opposition politicians ahead of the 2027 general elections. Archibong described the remark as a dangerous signal for democratic engagement in the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Archibong said the governor’s reported comments, which have generated widespread reactions across political circles, reflected intolerance for dissenting views and an attempt to intimidate political opponents. He argued that such rhetoric undermines the principles of democracy and fair competition.

The PDP candidate described the alleged remark as reckless and disappointing, stating that it was unbecoming of a leader who publicly identifies with Christian values. According to him, rather than fostering healthy democratic competition, the governor appeared to be embracing what he termed “political thuggery” at a time when citizens expect greater accountability and openness from public office holders.

Archibong expressed particular surprise that the statement was attributed to Otu, whom he noted is widely known as an apostle. He emphasised that elected leaders should uphold the moral principles they profess and lead by example.

Quoting Proverbs 22:22-23, Archibong urged the governor to embrace justice and fairness, warning against actions capable of undermining democratic freedoms. He stressed that opposition parties would not be intimidated and remained committed to issue-based campaigns and constructive engagement in the interest of Cross River residents.

“As opposition, we will not be cowed by threats. We are committed to pursuing wholesome, issue-based campaigns that focus on the welfare and aspirations of the people of Cross River State,” Archibong said.

He argued that any administration with a strong performance record should welcome scrutiny rather than perceive criticism as a threat. “If the administration of Governor Otu has done well, there would be little for the opposition to criticise. Governments that perform have nothing to fear from public examination,” he stated.

Archibong further urged the governor to channel his energy toward governance, noting that the people would be better served by investments, economic development, and policies capable of improving livelihoods. Drawing comparisons with developments in Abia and Enugu states, he said good governance remains the most effective response to political criticism.

The PDP candidate also challenged the administration to address concerns raised in recent security and development assessments of the state, rather than focus on political opponents. He reiterated his commitment to a peaceful and issue-driven campaign, insisting that no form of intimidation would deter the opposition from holding the government accountable.
