Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on young Nigerians to be wary of attempts to divide the country along ethnic and religious lines during political campaigns. In a statement shared on his X account on June 4, 2026, Obi emphasized that such tactics are often used by political actors who struggle to compete on ideas or performance.
Obi Warns Against Divisive Narratives
Obi recalled that after the 2023 elections, Nigeria saw a troubling rise in identity-based tensions, particularly in Lagos, where public discourse shifted from governance issues to ethnic suspicion. He warned that similar patterns are reemerging in more subtle forms, with narratives being planted and amplified by individuals who may not fully understand the broader agenda behind them.
“Many sincere and well-meaning Nigerians participated in these conversations without realizing they were being drawn into narratives carefully designed by others,” Obi said. He urged youths to verify information and question narratives to resist manipulation.
Defense of Pastor Adeboye
Obi defended the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, describing him as a respected faith leader who has consistently preached peace, love, and national unity. He noted that at 84 years old, Adeboye should not be a target for criticism or responsibility for nation-building.
“Even when faced with provocation, his response has always reflected humility, restraint, wisdom, and grace. At 84 years of age, it would be unfair for young and able-bodied Nigerians to transfer to him responsibilities that properly belong to them,” Obi stated.
Call for Youth Responsibility
Obi stressed that the task of rebuilding Nigeria rests primarily on the younger generation. He urged young people not to allow themselves to be used as tools for hatred or ethnic mobilization, warning against the weaponization of religion, ethnicity, or admiration for public figures.
“The duty of building a better Nigeria rests on the shoulders of the younger generation. It is their duty to lead the conversations, champion the reforms, and drive the positive change our nation urgently requires,” he added.
Background on Adeboye Discussions
Recent online discussions about Pastor Adeboye have involved claims and counter-claims regarding his stance on national issues. The church earlier issued a statement rejecting narratives that Adeboye canceled a planned protest or expressed political support for President Bola Tinubu. In a previous report, Adeboye spoke on Nigeria’s insecurity, urging government and security chiefs to act swiftly against terrorists and target their sponsors.
Obi’s call for unity comes as the country prepares for the 2027 elections, with hopes that youths will focus on national rebuilding rather than divisive politics.
