In a rare show of unity, political parties across Nigeria have declared their intention to stage a nationwide rally in support of the federal government's new tax regime. The event, scheduled for January 10, 2026, is being organized under the umbrella of the Forum of National Chairmen of Political Parties (NCPP).
A Unanimous Stand for National Interest
Following a comprehensive consultative meeting, the NCPP leadership, spearheaded by Barr. Uchenna Nnadi, stated that the tax reforms represent a critical economic policy that goes beyond partisan politics. The parties collectively described the initiative as a far-reaching economic policy designed to serve the broader national interest.
They argued that Nigeria's present economic difficulties require a collective sacrifice, a unity of purpose, and responsible leadership from all political divides. The NCPP emphasized that the tax regime introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration is not the agenda of a single party but a national economic necessity with benefits for future generations.
Objectives of the January 10 Rally
The planned rally aims to be a peaceful, inclusive, and non-partisan event. Its primary goals are to mobilize public backing, educate citizens on the long-term advantages of the reform, and show a united political front for policies that prioritize national development over short-term political gains.
According to the forum, the tax reforms are intended to broaden the government's revenue base, decrease excessive reliance on borrowing, enhance fiscal discipline, and improve the capacity of all government tiers to deliver essential infrastructure and social services.
Condemning Misinformation and Ensuring Transparency
The political leaders also took a firm stance against elements they labeled as anti-democratic forces. They distanced themselves from any alleged plots to exploit the tax reforms for political incitement, orchestrated protests, or the spread of false information.
"We unequivocally dissociate ourselves from any plot by anti-democratic elements to incite unrest or sabotage this reform," the NCPP declared. They warned that any attempt to weaponize the tax regime to create political chaos is a direct threat to Nigeria's democratic stability and national cohesion.
The forum called on all Nigerians, including youth groups, labour unions, civil society organizations, and the private sector, to approach the reforms with patience and patriotism. They equally urged the government agencies implementing the changes to ensure transparency, fairness, and sensitivity to build public trust, which they described as foundational for the reform's success.
Reaffirming their commitment to democracy and economic stability, the parties concluded that unity around such vital national reforms is indispensable for Nigeria's progress, stressing that the country's future depends on the ability to rise above partisan divisions.
