The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has taken decisive disciplinary action by suspending its Caretaker Committee Chairman, Dr. Nname Robinson Ewor. This drastic move follows Ewor's public declaration of support for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, a figure who has been expelled from the party.
The Reason Behind the Suspension
The suspension was announced on Saturday, January 3, 2026, after an emergency meeting of the party's State Caretaker Committee in Port Harcourt. The party leadership stated that Ewor's actions and statements were capable of undermining the PDP's unity and stability during a critical period. Specifically, Ewor had, during a press briefing on Friday, accused the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of misleading party leaders and supporters.
Ewor alleged that Governor Fubara created a false impression of readiness to challenge Wike politically, only to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in early December 2025, leaving PDP stakeholders stranded. The party viewed these public criticisms and his alignment with Wike as acts of gross indiscipline and a betrayal of the party's position.
Party Leadership Reacts and Reaffirms Stance
In response, the PDP swiftly moved to distance itself from Ewor's comments. Chief Ogbam Ojimah, the Committee's Secretary who has now been appointed Acting Chairman, addressed the media after the meeting. He formally announced Ewor's suspension from the positions of Caretaker Chairman and party member.
Ojimah strongly reaffirmed the party's loyalty to the national leadership under Dr. Kabiru Turaki. He emphasized a crucial point: Nyesom Wike remains expelled from the PDP and therefore has no right to interfere in the party's affairs in Rivers State. The party interpreted Ewor's open association with the FCT Minister as a voluntary resignation from his role, which was then formalized through suspension.
New Appointments and the Path Forward
Following the suspension, the committee resolved to appoint Chief Ogbam Ojimah as the Acting Chairman and Dr. Baribefu Fidunko as the Acting Secretary of the PDP in Rivers State. Ojimah stated the party's commitment to rebuilding and repositioning itself for effective participation in future elections, despite the ongoing political tensions in the state.
This incident highlights the deep internal fractures within the PDP in Rivers State, stemming from the prolonged political crisis between factions loyal to Minister Wike and Governor Fubara. The party's decisive action signals a clear attempt to enforce discipline and consolidate its structure under the national leadership, even as external pressures mount ahead of the 2027 general elections.
