The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has accused President Bola Tinubu of instigating internal conflicts within opposition parties. Speaking on Arise TV on Tuesday, Adebayo alleged that the challenges currently facing the SDP are politically motivated and orchestrated by the ruling party.
Allegations of Political Interference
Adebayo claimed that the president is attempting to exert influence beyond the All Progressives Congress (APC). He stated, “I am simply letting President Tinubu know that he cannot be the candidate for the APC, SDP, and Labour Party; he cannot be the Candidate-General of the nation. He should stick to his own party.” He further asserted that Tinubu is the architect of the so-called crisis in the SDP, adding that similar tactics have been used against other political parties.
Overreach into Institutions
The SDP candidate also criticized what he described as overreach into institutions and political processes. “They passed a law stating that no one can belong to more than one party, yet Tinubu wants to be affiliated with all political parties while acting as the Chairman of INEC and a part-time Chief Justice of Nigeria,” Adebayo remarked.
These comments come amid ongoing political realignments and internal disputes within several opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election. Adebayo’s statements highlight growing tensions between the ruling party and opposition groups as the election cycle approaches.
