In a significant political realignment, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has further consolidated its control over the Gombe State House of Assembly with the defection of two opposition lawmakers.
Lawmakers Cite Governor's Leadership as Key Reason
Mr. Gabriel Fushison of Kaltungo West Constituency and Mr. Malon Nimrod-Yari of Shongom Constituency, both previously with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were formally received into the APC fold on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The event took place at the Governor's Office in Gombe.
The legislators were accompanied by the Speaker of the House, Abubakar Luggerewo, his deputy, Sadam Bello, and other principal officers of the assembly. In explaining their dramatic switch, the defectors pointed directly to the state governor's performance.
Praise for Inclusive Governance and Fairness
Fushison and Nimrod-Yari stated that Governor Inuwa Yahaya's "inclusive governance style, sterling leadership, and impressive performance" across Gombe State motivated their decision. They emphasized that even while in the opposition, they were "never sidelined" and witnessed their constituencies benefiting from state projects and the dividends of democracy.
They specifically highlighted the governor's fairness, accessibility, and commitment to ensuring equitable development in all parts of the state as the primary inspiration for joining the APC.
Governor Hails Move as a Vote of Confidence
In his remarks while welcoming the new members, Governor Yahaya described the defection as a clear "vote of confidence" in his administration and its people-centred policies. He assured the lawmakers of equal treatment and full integration into the party's structure.
"The APC remains a platform for unity, progress, and service," Yahaya declared. He also took a moment to commend the leadership of the State Assembly for their cooperation, which he described as vital to maintaining peace, stability, and development in Gombe State.
APC Nears Total Control of State Assembly
This latest political shift has major implications for the balance of power in the state legislature. According to reports, the APC now controls a staggering 23 out of the 24 seats in the Gombe State House of Assembly. This near-total dominance significantly strengthens the ruling party's ability to pass legislation and govern without substantial opposition.
The defection of Fushison and Nimrod-Yari is seen as another blow to the PDP's influence in the state and a testament to the current administration's political strategy and outreach.
