Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has launched a sharp critique against Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election. Wike accused Obi of lacking the courage to confront political challenges, instead choosing to flee from difficulties. This statement came during Wike's monthly media chat on Monday, June 1.
Wike's Criticism of Obi's Political Trajectory
Wike, a former two-term governor of Rivers State, referenced Obi's history of switching political parties whenever internal crises arose. Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, has moved from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), then to the Labour Party, where he contested the 2023 presidential election and garnered over six million votes. After the Labour Party faced internal strife, he joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before finally settling in the NDC, where he emerged as the sole presidential aspirant.
Wike's Remarks on Leadership
During his media chat, Wike stated: "In Nigeria, you must have the capacity to face challenges instead of running at the first sign of trouble. The worst kind of leader is someone who identifies a problem but cannot make decisions to solve it." He contrasted Obi's approach with President Bola Tinubu's decisive action in removing the fuel subsidy, a move that previous leaders had identified as necessary but lacked the courage to implement.
Wike's Stance on the PDP Crisis
Wike, a chieftain of the PDP, also addressed the ongoing crisis within his party. He emphasized that despite working with the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government, he remains a member of the PDP. He said: "Leadership is not about identifying the problem, but about fixing it. I told people I would not leave the PDP irrespective of the challenges, and I am still here."
Obi's Political Moves
Obi's political journey has been marked by frequent party changes. He left the Labour Party after internal conflicts, joined the ADC for his 2027 presidential ambition, but soon realized the ADC would not zone its ticket to the south. He then moved to the NDC, where he became the sole presidential candidate, mirroring his emergence as the Labour Party candidate in 2023.
Wike's Advice to Obi
Wike urged Obi to learn from Tinubu's example of confronting challenges head-on. He described Obi's approach as "food is ready politics", implying that Obi seeks easy paths rather than engaging in struggles. Wike concluded that true leadership requires the courage to face and solve problems, not to evade them.
