APC Chieftain Urges Governor Otti to Apologize and Provide Evidence After Journalist Confrontation

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has faced severe criticism following what has been described as a dictatorial outburst against a journalist during a recent monthly media briefing in the state. The incident has sparked a strong reaction from political figures, with a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Paul Ikonne, demanding immediate action from the governor.

Demand for Unreserved Apology and Accountability

In a statement issued on Sunday, March 1, 2026, in Abuja, Prince Paul Ikonne, through his media aide Chiagoziem Enoch, called on Governor Otti to tender an unreserved apology to the journalist, Chika Nwabueze of Don Media Group. Ikonne emphasized that the journalist demonstrated commendable courage by raising critical issues concerning the welfare of Abia residents, rather than facing condemnation.

Ikonne stated: "That journalist deserves commendation, not condemnation. It takes fearlessness to demand accountability in an environment where public officials appear uncomfortable with scrutiny." He further questioned the governor's failure to provide data-backed evidence to support claims of improved economic conditions under his administration.

Criticism of Governance and Lack of Verifiable Data

The APC chieftain highlighted that as an economist, Governor Otti should have verifiable statistics and empirical data showcasing the impact of his policies on key sectors such as traders in Ariaria, Abia farmers, and the unemployed across the state. Ikonne argued that governance should focus on measurable outcomes rather than mere rhetoric, accusing the Otti administration of prioritizing social media activity over tangible development.

"Governance is not about rhetoric; it is about measurable outcomes," Ikonne asserted. He condemned the governor's conduct as unbecoming of a public servant, warning that it mirrors dictatorial tendencies where dissenting voices are silenced instead of engaged. In a democracy, he stressed, leaders must tolerate scrutiny and provide transparent answers to legitimate questions.

Background of the Incident and APC's Reaction

The controversy stems from a media chat where journalist Chika Nwabueze asked Governor Otti to provide verifiable data demonstrating that government policies have improved residents' living conditions. Instead of addressing the query, the governor reportedly resorted to personal attacks, leading the APC to condemn the verbal assault as inappropriate and undemocratic.

Previously, the APC had criticized Otti's conduct during the question-and-answer session, noting that the journalist was insulted after requesting accountability. Ikonne also threw a fresh challenge at the governor, urging him to stop distractions and show renovated schools to the people of Abia State, questioning the handling of a N54 billion fund.

This incident underscores ongoing tensions between the government and the media in Abia State, with calls for greater transparency and respect for journalistic integrity in political discourse.
