Primate Babatunde Elijah Ayodele, founder and head of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church in Oke Afa, Lagos, has issued a stark warning to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding the potential political fallout of a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2027 presidential election. Ayodele cautioned that such a move could be disastrous for President Bola Tinubu and the party's future.
Political Self-Murder Warning
In a statement released on Friday, May 22, through his media aide Osho Oluwatosin, Ayodele described the prospect of President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima running on the same ticket again as "political self-murder". He argued that it would severely weaken the party's chances of retaining power.
Ayodele stated: "It will be a political self-murder for Tinubu and Shettima to be on the same ticket for the 2027 presidential election. Tinubu should see it as an end for the APC as a party because people will stand against it."
National and International Opposition
The clergyman predicted that the ticket would face strong resistance both within Nigeria and internationally. He noted that even within religious circles, the arrangement would be contentious, triggering broader political tensions.
"Even Muslims and natural forces in Nigeria will go against it. Such a ticket will attract national and international struggles for the president, and this will limit the chances of the APC retaining victory in 2027," Ayodele added.
Dilemma Over Running Mate Choice
Ayodele also highlighted the difficulty Tinubu would face if he chose to replace Shettima as his running mate. He warned that dropping Shettima would create unexpected costs and confusion for the president.
"Also, not picking Shettima will cost Tinubu a lot; it will cost him what he doesn’t expect, and he will be confused," Ayodele said.
Foundational Error
The prophet described the current administration's Muslim-Muslim ticket as a foundational political error that would be hard to correct. He claimed that governance challenges would persist as a result of this initial misstep.
"The government is an error right from the moment they decided to do a Muslim-Muslim ticket, and it will be hard to correct. It will be hard for the president; only God can show him mercy," Ayodele concluded.
