Students from the Bassa Local Government Area in Kogi State have publicly commended a prominent opposition figure for his unwavering support and accessible leadership. The National Association of Bassa Students (NABS) extended its gratitude to Usman Okai Austin, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following a recent courtesy visit.
Students Praise Humility and Commitment
In a statement released on December 28, 2025, and signed by Kure Jeremiah Shiloba, who led the student delegation, NABS highlighted Okai's personal qualities and dedication. The students specifically praised his humility, approachability, and commitment to the development of the Bassa people, with a special focus on the student community. The statement noted that Okai, a former PDP candidate for the Bassa/Dekina Federal House of Representatives seat, provided a warm reception and open engagement.
The students described the atmosphere during their visit as friendly and welcoming, which they said underscored his dedication to grassroots development. Okai's Critique of Kogi State Governance
In related developments, Usman Okai Austin has been vocal in his criticism of the current Kogi State administration. He recently accused the state government, led by Governor Usman Ododo, of failing to translate increased federal revenue into visible development projects. Okai pointed out that despite a rise in allocations from the federation account since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office in 2023, Kogi State lacks tangible progress compared to its neighbours.
He linked the economic hardship faced by citizens to the removal of the fuel subsidy and subsequent inflation. Okai called for greater transparency and accountability in governance, questioning the government's expenditure. He also drew attention to the plight of local government workers who allegedly receive only partial salaries despite the state's improved financial inflow.
Call for Rule of Law in Anti-Corruption Fight
Furthermore, the PDP chieftain has commented on the state's anti-corruption efforts. He urged Governor Ododo to ensure the rule of law is upheld, particularly concerning the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) case involving former Governor Yahaya Bello and alleged financial crimes. Okai condemned what he described as the 'unjust' application of state power and called for a proper probe into the matter.
He criticised a state law that restricts the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) from investigating corruption cases involving state assets, arguing that it undermines governance transparency. Okai emphasized the need for the governor to take concrete steps to demonstrate a genuine commitment to combating corruption in Kogi State.
