Ex-IGP Adamu Calls for Support for Tinubu's Second Term, Announces Governorship Bid
Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has publicly urged Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu's re-election campaign, emphasizing that the administration's ongoing reforms hold the potential to fundamentally transform the nation's socio-economic and political framework if continued beyond 2027.
Adamu Commends Tinubu's Economic Policies
Speaking at a media engagement, Adamu, who is now setting his sights on the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State, praised President Tinubu's decisive move to eliminate the fuel subsidy. He highlighted that this policy has led to a substantial increase in monthly revenue allocations to both state and local governments across the country.
The former police chief challenged subnational leaders to provide transparent accounts of how these enhanced funds have been utilized since their implementation in 2023. "Mr. President deserves re-election. He has initiated bold reforms that will yield long-term benefits for Nigerians," Adamu stated. "The real question is: what have governors done with the increased allocations?"
Defense of Infrastructure Projects and Security Focus
Adamu also addressed criticism surrounding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, dismissing detractors by characterizing it as a strategic investment poised to deliver extensive economic advantages upon its completion.
Outlining his gubernatorial aspirations, the ex-IGP pointed to his extensive background in security as a key qualification for addressing the persistent insecurity plaguing Nasarawa and its neighboring states. His career in the police force, which included commanding operations across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, exposed him to a diverse array of security challenges, such as banditry, communal conflicts, and urban crime.
"Safety is the foundation of development. Investors will not come where there is insecurity. Farmers will not go to the fields when fear dominates. Without security, every promise on jobs, roads, and healthcare collapses," he emphasized.
Comprehensive Security and Economic Plans
Adamu further noted his deep understanding of the operational dynamics within various security institutions, including the police, military, civil defence corps, vigilance groups, and traditional structures. He asserted familiarity with the existing gaps that require urgent attention to bolster safety and stability.
On economic matters, he pledged to prioritize the empowerment of youth and women through targeted training programs, directly linking poverty to the escalation of insecurity. His consultations across Nasarawa State's 147 wards revealed profound economic hardship among residents, informing his policy focus.
His proposed infrastructure improvements include:
- Expanding power supply to enhance energy access.
- Developing road networks that connect rural communities to urban centers to facilitate the movement of agricultural produce.
- Ensuring reliable access to clean water for all citizens.
Stance on State Policing
In a notable departure from some former police chiefs who oppose the concept, Adamu expressed support for state policing. He argued that decentralized security structures are already functioning in practice, suggesting a need for formal recognition and enhancement of these systems to improve overall security governance.
