NEPZA MD Re-elected to WFZO Board in Panama

Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), has been re-elected to the board of the World Free Zones Organisation (WFZO) during its annual congress in Panama. This achievement underscores Nigeria's growing influence in the global special economic zones sector.

Global Support for Ogunyemi

Ogunyemi secured 85 percent of the total votes, with strong backing from African, European, and Latin American blocs. This mirrors his first election victory in Dubai in 2024, where similar continental support propelled him to the board.

WFZO Chairman's Praise

Dr. Mohammed Alzarooni, Chairman of WFZO, congratulated Ogunyemi on his re-election, highlighting his energy, commitment, and leadership during his first tenure. Alzarooni stated, "I simply wish to congratulate Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi of Nigeria and all other members of the WFZO board of directors on their delightful new tenure and continued exemplary service to the world."

NEPZA Management Commends Leadership

Mrs. Haleema Sani Kamba, Director of Corporate Services at NEPZA, praised Ogunyemi on behalf of management and staff, noting his distinguished deportment, excellent leadership, and deep knowledge of the scheme. She remarked, "We are not surprised that the impact of his excellent service and leadership has been acknowledged and rewarded on a global stage again."

Ogunyemi's Vision for Nigeria and Africa

In his acceptance speech, Ogunyemi expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from all voting blocs. He attributed his success to Nigeria's progress in repositioning its free trade zones under the Renewed Hope Agenda, making them globally competitive. He emphasized, "I have always said that the World Free Zone Organisation remains the melting point for Foreign Direct Investment opportunities. Nigeria and other African countries shall seize this opportunity to attract more FDIs to the continent."

Significance of WFZO

The WFZO serves as the umbrella body for countries managing Free Trade Zones and Special Economic Zones. It fosters long-term partnerships to promote economic prosperity and trust through economies of scale. The 2026 congress was notable for being the first to host two sitting presidents: the Presidents of Panama and the Dominican Republic.
