In a landmark move to foster unity and equity among the foremost royal stools in Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has officially inaugurated the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the Chairman of the Oyo State Traditional Council of Obas and Chiefs.
A New Era of Rotational Leadership
The historic inauguration took place on Thursday, 15 January 2026, at the House of Chiefs in Agodi, Ibadan. Governor Makinde announced that the council's leadership will now follow a rotational system among the three paramount rulers: the Olubadan of Ibadanland, the Soun of Ogbomoso, and the Alaafin of Oyo.
Each monarch is expected to hold the chairmanship for a term of two years. This decision, reached after extensive consultations, marks a significant shift in the council's governance structure and aims to promote mutual respect and collective ownership.
Ending Speculation and Strengthening Institutions
The governor's announcement effectively puts an end to months of intense speculation and debate regarding the leadership of the Oyo State Traditional Council. This council serves as the highest advisory body of traditional rulers to the state government.
Governor Makinde used the occasion to reaffirm his administration's commitment to strengthening traditional institutions. He described the royal fathers as indispensable custodians of culture, peace, and stability, critical for grassroots mobilisation, security, and community development across the state.
Monarchs Unite for Progress
The inauguration ceremony was graced by a gathering of prominent first-class monarchs from across Oyo State. Key figures in attendance included the Soun of Ogbomoso, the Eleruwa of Eruwa, the Aseyin of Iseyin, and the Okere of Saki, among others.
In his response, the newly inaugurated Chairman, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Makinde for reconstituting the council and restoring its full operations. He also thanked his fellow monarchs for their demonstrated unity and solidarity.
"We appreciate the governor for bringing the traditional council back to life and for giving us the opportunity to work together for the progress of our people," the Olubadan stated.
Focus on Peace, Security, and Development
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Oba Ladoja outlined the council's immediate priorities under his leadership. He emphasized that the promotion of peace, security, and development across all domains in Oyo State would be their primary focus.
"Our focus will be the pursuit of peace, security, safety, and the progress of our various domains. Traditional rulers remain close to the grassroots, and we will continue to work with the government to ensure stability and development in our communities," he affirmed.
The Olubadan further pledged that the council would act as a vital platform for constructive engagement with the state government on all matters affecting the welfare of the people. This new rotational arrangement is widely seen as a masterstroke for promoting lasting harmony and cooperative governance among the state's traditional leadership.
