Nigeria's Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has publicly celebrated a foundational figure in the nation's political history. A Towering Figure in Democratic Evolution

In a statement released by his special adviser, Bolaji Akinola, Dr. Oyetola described Chief Akande as a "towering figure in Nigeria's democratic evolution." He highlighted the elder statesman's profound impact, noting that his life of service, integrity, and courage has left a permanent mark on both governance and party politics in the country.

"Chief Bisi Akande remains one of the finest examples of purposeful leadership and unwavering commitment to public service," Oyetola stated. Foundational Governance and Political Stewardship

Dr. Oyetola, who is a former Governor of Osun State and the current leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, reflected on Akande's tenure as governor from 1999 to 2003. He emphasized that this period was crucial for establishing core principles of fiscal discipline, institutional reform, and governance focused on the people's welfare.

"Even at 87, Baba remains a voice of reason, courage, and clarity in our political space," Oyetola added. "His counsel is invaluable, and his life continues to inspire those of us privileged to follow in his footsteps."

The Journey of a Progressive Stalwart

Chief Bisi Akande was born on 16 January 1939 in Ila Orangun, Osun State. His political career began when he served as Deputy Governor of Oyo State from 1982 to 1983 under the late Governor Bola Ige. He later became the Governor of Osun State on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy.

His administration was notable for implementing key policies on:

  • Free education
  • Healthcare improvement
  • Water supply expansion

He navigated significant political challenges during his term, including complex staff restructuring and local disputes.

Beyond his executive role, Akande played a pivotal part in shaping opposition politics in Nigeria. He served as the first interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), contributing critically to the party's formation through mergers in 2013. He has also been a consistent voice on national issues, advocating for decentralised governance and greater inclusion of youth in decision-making processes.

In closing his birthday message, Dr. Oyetola offered prayers for God's continued grace upon Chief Akande. He wished the elder statesman good health, renewed strength, and many more years of purposeful living in service to humanity and Nigeria.
