The revered monarch, who was also the Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, joined his ancestors at the age of 89.

A Pillar of Tradition and Development

In a statement released on Monday, January 12, 2026, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the monarch's departure as a monumental loss. He emphasized that the impact of Oba Akran's passing extends far beyond the ancient town of Badagry, affecting the entire state of Lagos and Nigeria. The governor highlighted the late Oba's nearly 49-year reign on the throne, marked by exceptional wisdom, a deep commitment to cultural preservation, and relentless advocacy for the development of his domain.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Oba Akran was a traditional ruler who rendered selfless service, leaving behind a powerful legacy that blends unity, tradition, and modern progress. His role as the custodian of Badagry's rich heritage was instrumental in promoting the kingdom's historical sites and cultural festivals both within Nigeria and internationally, thereby boosting tourism and cultural exchange.

Governor's Tribute and Call to Action

The governor's official commiseration was directed to the people of Badagry, the late monarch's family, friends, and the state's traditional institutions. "On behalf of my wife, the government, and the people of Lagos State, I commiserate with the people of Badagry, the deceased’s family, friends, associates, and traditional institutions on this great loss," Sanwo-Olu stated.

He further elaborated on the Oba's dual legacy, recalling that Oba Akran was also a respected journalist before his ascension. As a first-class traditional ruler, he became a stabilizing force, skillfully uniting diverse interests within his kingdom. The governor urged the family, subjects, and all who benefited from the Oba's tireless work to focus on immortalizing his remarkable contributions to society.

Sanwo-Olu concluded his tribute with a prayer: "I pray that Almighty God be pleased with the soul of the late monarch and grant the royal family and the people of the Badagry kingdom and Lagos State the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss."
