In a heartfelt and public appeal, Mrs. Regina Akume, a member of the House of Representatives, has called on her husband, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to recommit to the Christian faith.
A Public Plea at a Family Celebration
The significant remarks were delivered during the wedding reception of the SGF's son, which took place on Sunday, December 28, in Makurdi, Benue State. The event also doubled as a celebration of Senator Akume's 72nd birthday anniversary. A video clip from the occasion was subsequently shared by Idoma Television on Monday, December 29.
In her speech, Mrs. Akume, who represents the Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency, offered prayers for her husband's longevity and well-being. She then transitioned into a pointed piece of advice concerning his spiritual path.
'Christianity Brought Him This Far'
"I pray that the Lord will increase his years, good health of mind and body, and give him clarity in thinking and doing things right," she began.
She continued with a firm admonition: "And he should remember that he is a Christian, and it is Christianity that brought him this far. To drop Christianity now and go for anything else, he will not be successful."
Mrs. Akume concluded her appeal with a direct call to action: "So my advice to him is to come back to Christianity and follow the line of Christ. We came all the way to the office of SGF, not through enemies but through Jesus Christ. And Jesus Christ is still alive and still working for us. I wish that he would come back to Christianity."
Context of the Remarks
This public counsel from the SGF's wife emerges against a backdrop of widespread reports that Senator George Akume recently took another wife. He is said to have married Zaynab Ngohemba-George, who was previously married to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
The timing and public nature of Mrs. Akume's statement have sparked considerable discussion, intertwining personal family matters with faith and public office.
