President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorized the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State, working alongside the state government, following a high-powered delegation from the Federal Government. The delegation visited Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area after the abduction of pupils and teachers.
Delegation Led by Top Officials
The presidential team, which arrived on Sunday, May 31, 2026, was headed by the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. It also included National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, and Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications Sunday Dare. The delegation conveyed Tinubu's commitment to securing the safe return of the victims.
Specialized Rescue Unit Deployed
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, disclosed in a statement that Tinubu directed a specialized security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to secure the release of the abducted individuals. The delegation promised community leaders and lawmakers to relay their request for a military base in the area to the President for consideration and approval.
Gbajabiamila, addressing residents in both English and Yoruba, stated: "Mr. President is deeply troubled by this incident. Whatever it takes, our children and teachers will be brought back home safely. He has issued all necessary directives and is providing every support required by our security agencies to achieve that objective. Your pain and anxiety are understood. By the grace of God, your children will return safely to your arms."
Community Mourns, Governor Vows Action
Governor Seyi Makinde also visited the affected communities, vowing to secure the safe release of victims and ensure justice. The community is in mourning after bandits killed one teacher and abducted staff and students from three local schools. In a previous incident, Professor Wole Alamu broke down during the governor's visit following his wife's abduction.
Abducted Principal Pleads for Help
The abducted school principal, Mrs. Alamu, and a teacher appeared in emotional videos from captivity, pleading with the government for urgent rescue. Mrs. Alamu warned that a military rescue attempt on May 26 had worsened their situation, leading to another captive being selected for execution. She revealed that the children and teachers are suffering under harsh weather conditions as their captors grow impatient.
