President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration's resolve to tackle Nigeria's security and economic challenges, asserting that the country will not surrender to terrorism, banditry, or any form of criminal intimidation. This message was delivered on Sunday, June 7, by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during a national inter-denominational church service at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of Democracy Day celebrations.
President's Commitment to National Security
Speaking on behalf of the President, Akume emphasized that Nigeria's 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule reflect the courage of citizens and pro-democracy advocates who fought for civil governance. He paid tribute to the June 12 heroes, noting that many paid a heavy price, including imprisonment, persecution, and loss of life, in defense of democracy.
Government Acknowledges Hardship, Promises Relief
Akume acknowledged the current economic pressures and insecurity in parts of the country, stating that the Tinubu administration is aware of public concerns and is actively pursuing policies to ease hardship and improve living conditions. He added that efforts to strengthen democratic dividends and restore public confidence will be intensified across all sectors.
Security remains a national priority, Akume stressed, noting that protecting lives and restoring peace are central to government policy. Security agencies are being reinforced to address threats nationwide and secure the release of abducted citizens. He issued a strong assurance: “The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry, or any form of criminal intimidation.”
Call for Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections
With political activities building toward the 2027 elections, Akume urged Nigerians to reject violence and divisive rhetoric. He called on faith leaders, traditional rulers, civil society, and the media to promote peace and national unity.
Security Experts Advocate Technology Use
Earlier, security experts urged the Nigerian government to deploy modern technology, including drones, geolocation systems, and advanced intelligence platforms, to accelerate efforts to rescue pupils and teachers abducted from schools in May. They argued that leveraging technology could improve the chances of locating victims quickly and safely while strengthening Nigeria's broader response to kidnapping and other security threats.
