The 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in Abuja was marked by the conspicuous absence of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike. The solemn ceremony, which honours Nigeria's fallen military heroes, saw a gathering of the nation's top leadership, but the minister's seat remained empty.
High-Profile Gathering at Eagle Square
On Thursday, January 15, 2026, the cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier at Eagle Square, Abuja, was the focal point for a national event of remembrance. The ceremony is a traditional tribute to officers and soldiers who died defending Nigeria, while also recognising serving personnel and veterans.
Vice President Kashim Shettima led the dignitaries at the event. Other prominent figures who participated in the wreath-laying ritual included the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, was represented by his deputy, Benjamin Kalu. Also present were the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; service chiefs, senior military officers, diplomats, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Grace Morenike Henry.
Protocol Snag and Ministerial Representation
The Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, did attend the event. However, her late arrival coincided with that of the Vice President, leading to a minor protocol issue. Officials temporarily denied her access to the saluting dais during the general salute.
She was later able to join Vice President Shettima and others in laying a wreath at the cenotaph. Despite her presence, it was unclear if she was formally representing the absent FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The official programme had listed the FCT Minister among the expected wreath-layers, alongside the President and Vice President.
The Shadow of a Past Confrontation
No official reason was provided for Minister Wike's absence from this significant national event. However, sources suggest a possible link to a publicised standoff with a naval officer in Abuja late last year.
On November 11, 2025, Wike was involved in a confrontation with Lieutenant A. M. Yerima of the Nigerian Navy in the Gaduwa District. The incident occurred over a disputed parcel of land allegedly acquired by retired Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo.
Lieutenant Yerima, acting as Gambo's security aide, reportedly blocked the minister and his team from accessing the property. A video of the heated exchange circulated widely on social media, showing Wike challenging the officer who stood his ground.
This incident may have influenced the minister's decision to stay away from a ceremony dominated by military personnel and top security officials.
Ceremonial Highlights and Traditional Expectations
The 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony featured poignant highlights, including artillery gun salutes, the firing of volleys, a minute of silence, and the symbolic release of pigeons for peace and unity.
Traditionally, the FCT Minister plays a prominent role in this Abuja-based event, taking the general salute and laying a wreath. Wike's absence this year broke from that tradition, drawing attention and speculation amidst the dignified proceedings to honour Nigeria's fallen heroes.
