Wike Announces End to Rivers State Discord Following Presidential Intervention

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly declared that he no longer holds any animosity towards his successor and the current Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara. This significant announcement comes in the wake of a fresh intervention by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at resolving the longstanding political tensions between the two prominent figures.

Presidential Mediation Brings Closure to Political Feud

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, February 10, after inspecting several ongoing projects in the territory, Wike expressed optimism that this development marks a turning point. He stated, "I believe that by the grace of God, this will be the last time the president will be bothered with this issue and that this will be the last time the Rivers people will need to hear this kind of discord." The minister emphasized the authoritative role of the president in national affairs, noting that "the president is the father of the nation, and when a father speaks, his children must listen and do the needful to ensure peace and progress."

Path Forward for Rivers State Assembly and Governor

Reflecting on the specifics of the truce, Wike outlined clear expectations for both the Rivers State House of Assembly and Governor Fubara. He said, "The House of Assembly will do what they are supposed to do, and I am confident that the governor will also carry out the acts required of him to ensure this peace is sustainable." This statement comes against the backdrop of recent impeachment moves initiated by the state assembly, which is largely seen as loyal to Wike, against Governor Fubara.

Commitment to Stability and Progress in Rivers State

Wike maintained that the primary focus now is on fostering stability and moving the state forward. He added, "the most important thing is for Rivers State to move forward, and we are grateful to Mr President for his tireless commitment to ensuring that we reach this understanding." The political solution was facilitated through a meeting summoned by President Tinubu on Monday, February 9, bringing together Wike and Fubara to address the escalating tensions.

This intervention underscores the federal government's role in mediating state-level disputes to promote harmony and development across Nigeria. The resolution is expected to pave the way for enhanced governance and reduced political friction in Rivers State, benefiting its citizens and contributing to national cohesion.
