Governor Abiodun Reaffirms Commitment to Ogun Road Expansion and Infrastructure Development
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has strongly reiterated his administration's unwavering dedication to the extensive reconstruction and expansion of roads across the state. During a recent inspection of ongoing projects, the governor highlighted that since taking office in 2019, his government has successfully constructed more than 1,600 kilometres of roads. He further announced an ambitious target to build an additional 2,000 kilometres before the conclusion of his tenure, emphasizing that road infrastructure is pivotal for driving economic growth, enhancing mobility, and fostering social development in Ogun State.
Focus on Critical Arterial Roads and Statewide Distribution
Governor Abiodun specifically reaffirmed his resolve to complete the 20-kilometre Akute to Ijoko arterial road, which he described as a critical inter-zone connector essential for the state's economy. He criticized previous interventions that had worsened the road's condition and explained that his administration has adopted a phased, engineering-based approach to ensure durability and effectiveness. "This road is almost 20 kilometres long—20 kilometres of dual carriageway, which means 40 kilometres with drainage. By His grace, we will finish this road, my administration is committed to the ongoing road revolution that we have embarked upon," Abiodun stated during the inspection.
State officials, including the Commissioner for Works, Ade Akinsanya, countered claims that development is concentrated in limited locations by asserting that road projects are spread across all 20 local government areas. Akinsanya noted that the administration inherited over 4,000 kilometres of deteriorated roads and has implemented a statewide strategy focused on rural access, economic hubs, and food corridors. He added that recently approved projects in key areas like Abeokuta, Sagamu, and Ijebu Ode reflect the growing population and industrial footprint of the state.

The road expansion efforts are already yielding significant benefits, with projects such as the Ijebu Ode to Epe to Majoda Road being cited as transformative. This route has eased access to Lagos, improved market connectivity, and boosted investor confidence, positioning Ogun State as an active construction zone where infrastructure directly supports commerce and industry. Despite facing criticism from opposition figures regarding federal roads, the government maintains that its infrastructure programme remains consistent and impactful, with communities experiencing improved movement, increased business activity, and better access to essential services.
Observers note that Governor Abiodun inherited many federal roads in poor condition, including corridors like Ota to Idi Iroko and Sagamu to Abeokuta, but chose to intervene despite limited federal support.
