Akwa Ibom Denies Adultery Bill, Reaffirms Seaport Commitment
Akwa Ibom Govt Denies Deputy Governor Sponsored Adultery Bill

The Akwa Ibom State Government has issued a strong rebuttal against what it calls false and misleading reports circulating on social media. These reports had alleged that the state's Deputy Governor, Akon Eyakenyi, sponsored a bill in the House of Assembly aimed at criminalizing adultery.

Government Debunks Fake News on Alleged Bill

In an official statement released on 14 January 2026 and signed by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, the government categorically denied the claims. The statement clarified that Deputy Governor Eyakenyi neither sponsored the purported bill nor had any knowledge of its existence.

The government described the online reports as the work of purveyors of fake news who are bent on distorting facts for personal or political gain. Commissioner Umanah provided a constitutional explanation, noting that as a member of the State Executive Council, the deputy governor does not have the mandate to independently sponsor bills in the legislature.

"Any executive bill must first be considered and approved by the Executive Council before being transmitted to the House of Assembly," Umanah stated. He emphasized that the alleged bill did not originate from any official channel of either the executive or legislative arm of the Akwa Ibom government and should be completely disregarded by the public.

Governor Eno Signs Pact for Ibom Deep Seaport

In a separate but significant development, the state government has moved forward with a major economic project. Governor Umo Eno has reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to delivering the Ibom Deep Seaport project.

The governor made this declaration during the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the state government and a development consortium. The event took place at the Government House in Uyo.

Governor Eno, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Enobong Uwah, described the seaport as a critical infrastructure necessity for the people of Akwa Ibom. He stated that the project is vital for boosting the state's economy and transforming the entire region.

Ensuring Timely Project Execution

The governor urged the consortium to work closely with the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP), which is the government's official representative on the project. This collaboration is deemed essential to ensure the timely execution of the deep seaport initiative.

"My administration is fully committed to putting all necessary requirements in place to get this project on track," Governor Eno assured. The signing of the MoU marks a concrete step towards realizing this long-awaited infrastructure, which is expected to create jobs and enhance maritime trade in the Niger Delta region.
