Ogun State Governor Approves Weekly Day Off and N10,000 Transport Allowance for Workers
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has approved a significant new measure to support civil servants in the state, introducing a weekly day off and a N10,000 monthly transport allowance. This initiative is designed to provide relief from the escalating costs of fuel and transportation, aiming to enhance the overall living standards of workers.
Details of the Palliative Measures
The Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, announced that these measures will be implemented for a period of three months, starting from April 2026 and concluding in June 2026. In a statement issued on Thursday, April 16, 2026, Onasanya explained that the intervention is a direct response to the recent hike in fuel pump prices across Nigeria, which has led to increased transportation costs and a higher cost of living.
Governor Abiodun has graciously approved one day off duty per week for workers in Ogun State, as part of efforts to provide succour to the workforce. Additionally, a special transport allowance of ₦10,000 will be paid monthly during this three-month period. This dual approach is intended not only to offer financial relief but also to boost productivity by reducing stress and improving work-life balance.
Exemptions for Essential Duty Staff
However, it is important to note that not all workers will benefit from the weekly day-off arrangement. Employees on essential duties, including medical personnel, judicial staff, teachers, security personnel, and heads of departments, are exempted from this provision. Despite this exemption, these essential workers will still receive the ₦10,000 transport allowance, ensuring they are not left out of the financial support.
Onasanya emphasized that the goal is to cushion the impact of economic challenges while maintaining critical services. This targeted exemption ensures that vital operations continue uninterrupted, while still providing assistance to those in need.
Context and Similar Initiatives
This move by Governor Abiodun follows similar actions by other state governors in Nigeria. For instance, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State recently approved a ₦10,000 monthly transportation allowance for civil servants, effective from April 2026, to address rising transportation costs. Additionally, the Gombe government, under Governor Inuwa Yahaya, has approved an extra N5,000 allowance for local government staff, set to be reflected in payrolls by July 2025.
These initiatives highlight a growing trend among state governments to provide financial relief to workers amidst economic pressures. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has consistently advocated for such measures, citing the soaring petrol prices as a major driver for the need for support.
In summary, Governor Dapo Abiodun's approval of a weekly day off and N10,000 transport allowance represents a proactive step to alleviate the burdens faced by Ogun State civil servants. By addressing both time and financial constraints, this policy aims to foster a more supportive work environment and improve overall well-being during a challenging economic period.
