Lawmaker Appeals for Peace Amid Escalating Clashes in Oshodi

Stephen Olukayode Ogundipe, the lawmaker representing Oshodi/Isolo Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has issued a strong call for an immediate cessation of hostilities among youths and community leaders in his constituency. He emphasized the urgent need to embrace peace as rising clashes continue to cause significant unrest and widespread destruction of property in Oshodi, a key area in Lagos State.

Concerns Over Persistent Crisis Hindering Community Progress

Ogundipe expressed deep concern during a recent briefing with journalists, where he highlighted the impactful governance initiatives he has facilitated over the past three years. He noted that the ongoing crisis is becoming increasingly persistent, effectively holding the community back from achieving its full potential. "We won’t gain anything by killing each other, especially since Oshodi is the gateway that we pride ourselves on," he stated. "And it’s not good that negativity is arising now, just as people are beginning to see the progress being made in Oshodi. People are speaking positively about us, but the current infighting is bringing back the negative reputation we used to have."

Allegations of External Involvement in Violence

As he seeks re-election, Ogundipe claimed that many of those involved in the violence are not actual residents of Oshodi. Instead, he alleged that individuals from outside the area enter to instigate riots and then flee after the crisis subsides. He appealed directly to the youths and stakeholders in the constituency to avoid actions that could tarnish the community's image, stressing the importance of collective efforts to combat any behavior that might harm Oshodi's progress.

Emphasis on Dialogue and Development Initiatives

Ogundipe underscored the critical need to prioritize dialogue over conflict. "It is crucial that we prioritise dialogue over conflict and support ongoing development initiatives that will bring peace and stability to us," he added. He highlighted that such initiatives are essential for fostering a harmonious environment and ensuring long-term stability in the region.

Ongoing Efforts to Address the Crisis

Despite the challenges, Ogundipe noted that efforts are actively underway to address the crisis. These include engaging with youths to better understand their grievances and collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies to help tame the growing unrest. He expressed optimism that through these combined efforts, the community can overcome the violence and restore peace, allowing Oshodi to continue on its path of positive development and growth.
