Delta State has taken a decisive step to end the notorious traffic gridlock at a key junction with the official commencement of a major flyover project. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori personally performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the N39.3 billion Otovwodo Flyover in Ughelli, marking a pivotal moment in the state's infrastructure development.
A Long-Awaited Solution for a Critical Junction
Governor Oborevwori stated that the project represents a permanent fix for the severe and persistent traffic congestion at Otovwodo Junction, located on the busy East-West Road. He revealed that he has personally experienced the frustrating gridlock at this spot, which costs commuters valuable hours of productivity every single day.
The governor explained that Ughelli's rapid growth as a historic commercial and educational center has placed immense strain on its road network. The Otovwodo Junction, connecting several major arterial routes, had become a notorious bottleneck, hindering movement and economic activity.
Project Scope and Firm Deadline
The massive contract for the flyover has been awarded to the renowned construction giant, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. The company's Managing Director, Peer Lubasch, was present at the ceremony alongside the governor.
Oborevwori set a clear and non-negotiable timeline for the project, emphasizing that it must be completed within 12 months. He stressed the strategic importance of the junction to the state's economy and daily life, making the deadline critical.
The engineering work will involve a multi-span reinforced concrete bridge designed with dual carriageways. The project scope also includes constructing new roundabouts and carrying out extensive associated roadworks to seamlessly link the East-West Road with other major routes in the area.
Interim Measures and Economic Benefits
Prior to this permanent solution, the state government implemented interim measures to alleviate the traffic pressure. Governor Oborevwori disclosed that his administration constructed several alternative link roads at a cost of nearly N6 billion. These routes include Uduere Street, Okogbe Street, Oru Street, Edo Street, and Royal Avenue, which connect to the Agbarha-Otor Road.
The governor highlighted the significant socio-economic benefits expected from the new flyover. He pointed to a major reduction in travel time, improved road safety, and a substantial boost to commercial activities in Ughelli and surrounding areas.
Furthermore, the construction phase itself is projected to be a major job creator. Oborevwori noted that the project will generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities across the entire construction value chain, providing a welcome economic stimulus.

With construction now underway, Governor Oborevwori made a direct appeal to residents, motorists, and business owners in Ughelli. He urged them to exercise patience and strictly comply with all traffic management directives issued during the building period. This cooperation is essential to minimize disruption and ensure the project stays on its tight schedule.
The Otovwodo Flyover project is positioned as a cornerstone of the Oborevwori administration's infrastructure renewal agenda.
