Ondo Governor Aiyedatiwa Vows Decisive Action Against Criminal Attacks
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has declared a firm commitment to take decisive action against criminals terrorizing various parts of the state, particularly in the Akure North Local Council Area. This announcement follows a wave of brutal attacks that have resulted in multiple fatalities and heightened fear among local communities.
Condolence Visit and Community Demands
During a condolence visit to the palace of the Olumafon of Imafon, Oba Samuel Adegbehingbe Aliu, on Tuesday, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed deep sympathy for the bereaved families. He described the recent killings as disturbing and emphasized that while insecurity remains a nationwide challenge, his administration will not tolerate such violent acts within Ondo State.
The governor's visit came as grieving community leaders urgently demanded action against gunmen operating in the axis. In recent days, communities such as Igushin, Ilado, and Imafon have faced severe insecurity, including the tragic deaths of a female farmer and her daughter, as well as the shooting of a young man who resisted an abduction attempt.
Intensified Security Measures
Aiyedatiwa assured residents that measures are already being intensified to restore calm and safeguard lives and property. He disclosed that security agencies, including the police, Civil Defence Corps, and the military, are working in close collaboration with local hunters and vigilantes to secure forests and adjoining communities.
While acknowledging progress in tackling kidnapping for ransom, the governor warned that the recent spate of killings indicates a troubling shift that must be addressed urgently. He revealed that more than 100 suspected kidnappers have been arrested, detained, and charged to court, with ongoing operations aimed at flushing out criminal elements hiding in forest enclaves.
Call for Collective Action
Governor Aiyedatiwa called for collective action, urging residents, particularly youths, elders, hunters, and vigilantes, to cooperate fully with security agencies. He issued a stern warning against harboring criminals, noting that such actions undermine efforts to combat insecurity by leaking vital information.
Earlier, Johnson Ogunbolude, chairman of Akure North Local Council, expressed concern over the attacks, describing them as unfortunate. He noted that although the governor was out of the state at the time of the incidents, he remained in constant touch with community leaders and security agencies. Ogunbolude appealed to residents to support government efforts with constructive contributions.
Community Leaders' Concerns
In his remarks, the Olumafon of Imafon, Oba Samuel Adegbehingbe Aliu, commended the governor's intervention, particularly the ongoing road construction, which he said would help address security challenges. However, he lamented the lack of firearms for vigilantes, noting that this has hampered their effectiveness. The monarch also criticized the delayed response of some security operatives, alleging that certain personnel operate without adequate weapons.
Similarly, the Ojogbariaka of Ilado, Oba Kayode Ajomale, lamented the inadequacy of existing facilities. He pointed out that a vast area stretching from Familugba to Zone 4, covering approximately 182 kilometers, is served by only one police station located roughly 12 kilometers away.
Police Response
Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal described the attacks as unfortunate, stating that security operatives are familiar with the terrain and have previously conducted bush-combing operations in the area. He emphasized the commitment of law enforcement to address the security challenges and protect residents.
